Proper Etiquette when you go to a K-pop concert

AKP STAFF

Concerts can be the most memorable experience, but those moments can be ruined. With all the hype of being able to see your favorite performers, there's no telling of how the crowd can react within a concert, and with so many K-pop artists making their way around the world through their tours, there have been great moments, but also some upsetting moments as well.

Recently, LOONA made a stop in Chicago for their tour, but in the middle of the concert, member Kim Lip left the stage. The reason? Fans would not stop repeatedly chanting for member Vivi, while Kim Lip was trying to give her speech.

Now, this isn't the first time that fans went to the extremes of being rude, whether it be to the artist themselves or to audience members around them. BTS' Jin was hit straight on the head with a yellow object, IU was hit in the face with a water bottle, and BLACKPINK's Jennie luckily was able to block a stuffed toy being thrown her way. Seventeen's Jeonghan almost got hit with a concert-goer's phone, only to be hit a couple of seconds later on the head with a paper ball. During BTS' most recent 'Permission to Dance' concert held in Las Vegas, the group members had to tell the crowd not to throw things as they were on moving platforms making their way around the audience. Okay, we get it, everyone's excited to see their favorite artists perform, and in the short two-three hours fans have with their favorite groups, we want to be able to get their attention, but at what cost?

Not only that, but even having respect and consideration for other audience members is often times absent too during concerts. There have been several instances where fans will bring extra large signs to hold up during the concert as a means to grab the attention of their bias. Thus, preventing those behind them from being able to peacefully watch their favorite artists on stage. Other times, fans will bring signs that actually have some really inappropriate and explicit content. During one of EXO's concerts, a sasaeng fan was seen holding up a "rape me" sign at a concert, causing Suho to feel disgusted and angry.

As with any K-Pop concert, there is also a segment in which the artists speak with their fans, going through introductions of each member during these times too; rather than respectfully listening to the members speaking, fans will either scream their lungs out or just interrupt members as they're speaking. So why is it that when it comes to concert day, everyone's sense of humanity just disappears? Where is the decency in keeping with etiquette?

Even many companies such as LiveNation and POWERHOUSE make sure to send out a list of regulations that fans are expected to follow on concert day so that there is no harm done and that everyone who attends can have the time of their lives.

Why can't everyone just have a great time? No hassle, no problems? Especially considering the fact that many fans have probably spent a good amount of funds to actually attend the concert, the artists are probably extremely fatigued but want to put on a good show. Everyone just wants to have a good time.

The problems don't even start there. The number of issues that arise when concerts don't have assigned seating. There are so many fans just pushing and shoving each other, other people using the people in front of them as camera tripods; it really can become a big mess and can also present chances of greater injuries.

Let's be practical here; there are thousands of people within the crowd. What really is the likelihood that the artists would solely be able to recognize you? We're just a face among a sea of faces. By throwing something at their face, you just end up setting up a bad image for the rest of the group, and it also spoils the overall mood of the concert. By screaming out their name and disrespecting other members, also puts a damper on what is supposed to be one of the most memorable days in one's life. We, as fans, want to present ourselves as a mature fandom, not a rowdy and disrespectful one. So with that being said, here are a few rules of thumb when it comes to attending a concert, especially when and if it's your first one!

1. Make sure not to throw anything on stage. Unless specifically signaled by the artists themselves to you. Everyone wants to be acknowledged by their favorite idol, but is it really worth it? It's a matter of safety.

2. Do not carry in large signs; you tire out your own arms and block the view for others. Rather bring a small banner, or use your phone as a marquee.

3. People are not camera tripods, so don't use them as one for your own photos or videos. This can cause severe bruising and can lead to more extensive injuries.

4. While they're beautiful, lightsticks are not meant to be used as a bludgeoning tool.

5. Be aware of your surroundings. You are not the only person at the concert.

6. Don't push and shove. This could be very dangerous for those in front and in the back of you and can lead to a domino effect of people falling over.

7. Don't stand on the chairs. Chairs are not stepping stools. Just because you want to get a better view of your favorite artists doesn't mean you should risk a sprained ankle or, worse, falling on top of those around you.

8. Be respectful: Not just to the artists, but to fellow fans. After all, everyone is there to have a good time.

9. Have fun! But be considerate! Happy artists means a happy fandom!

Nothing is worth getting injured or hurting others just for the one-second glimpse of your biases' attention, so let's make sure that we are fans that can uphold a good reputation!

"This can cause severe bruising and can lead to more extensive injuries."
