Flight attendants talk about how Sasaeng fans cross the line at the airport

AKP STAFF

One of the biggest problems in the K-pop industry is the issue with the Sasaeng fans - obsessive fans who stalk or commit other behaviors that cross the line and invade the privacy of celebrities. This issue might be more prevalent in the K-pop industry as idols garner much attention the more they become popular.

Last year, two flight attendants sat down with the AYO YouTube channel to talk about some of the craziest Sasaeng incidents they had experienced and talked about the damages these obsessive fans cause, not only to the idols but also to the airline and the staff. This video was visited once again by Korean netizens recently as the issue of Sasaengs has not yet been completely resolved. Still to this day, there are fans who cross the line, invading the idol's privacy.

In the video, the flight attendants responded to a few comments netizens asked about idols going on the flight. One netizen wrote, "When you go to the airport to see your idol, you can purchase the ticket and take pictures of them, then ask for a refund at the boarding gate, right?" After reading this comment, the flight attendants let out a deep sigh and continued to say, "I hope you don't do this."

She continued to explain, "It's like they go to the gates with their idols and take pictures of the idols shopping at Duty-Free and ask for a refund right before boarding. right in front of the gate." The flight attendant continued to explain, "If you ask for a refund in front of the gate, somebody else could have taken that seat but couldn't so we'll just lose a seat like that. Plus, once you've checked in, you can't leave by yourself. You need to go to the legal department and customs to submit a document explaining why you're leaving. And if you shopped at Duty-Free, we have to go to the ships together to refund the items."

The other flight attendant added, "The flight departing could be delayed because of one person." The flight attendant firmly asked netizens, "I hope you don't do that."

Another issue the flight attendants brought up is the large cameras that the Sasaeng fans would bring onto the flight to take photos of the idols. One flight attendant pointed out, "They being a big telephoto lens on the plane and take pictures of the idols, and I'd have a panic attack if that was me." The other flight attendant explained, "One time, some idol fan gave me a voice recorder and asked me to record the conversation with the idol."

The flight attendants criticized that those actions are not a way to show love for the idol, but it is a form of harassment that makes the idols uncomfortable or even terrified.

Netizens who watched the video and saw the post commented, "That's so scary. That's a crime, please wake up Sasaengs," "That's so creepy," "I didn't know Sasaengs were this bad," "No wonder BTS's V is scared of Sasaengs," "They must be mental to do what they do," "That's stalking and it's a crime," "they need to stop bothering idols who are trying to comfortably fly," "These Sasaengs have no common sense," "I'm an idol fan but I still don't understand," "That's so crazy," "all the stories the flight attendants shared are so crazy," and "Sasaengs are really mentally ill. It's an illness."

It sounds like the airlines could help by changing their policies. I don't think it's that easy to get a refund for a flight in the US.
