The actor first expressed the wish to star in a romantic comedy but commented, "I wouldn't want to watch a romance with me in it either" and continued, "I will do a production like a romantic comedy that includes comical or other factors but not just solely romance. Handsome people are the ones who need to do romance."

The next question regarded his public relationship with Ye Jung Hwa. He replied, "We're doing well." When asked if he feels any pressure after his relationship went public, Ma Dong Seok answered, "There are some overwhelming factors in public relationships but it's alright." As for his marriage plans, Ma Dong Seok commented, "I want to focus on work for now."
In November 2016, Ma Dong Seok and Ye Jung Hwa confirmed to be dating.
