Staff Picks: Best MVs of 2016

AKP STAFF
misc.
1. Paul: PALOALTO's 'Home'
A great song and a very effective MV. It's a pretty simple MV that features footage from his concerts and travels across the globe. Vlog style but works well with the down-to-earth mentality of PALOALTO. A simple MV that fits my style, no matter where you are in the world, you always look forward to going home.
2. Edward: Dal Shabet's 'Fri, Sat, Sun'
Not only am I a big fan of the song but I am also a big fan of this lively MV. The bright aesthetics and eye-catching fashion make Dal Shabet shine like queens! I also enjoy how boxed in the MV is. Depicting their everyday lives at work, feeling trapped in a cubicle, they break free into a wide open space to dance the night away and even cutely party it up in their sweet but humble apartment. It has a great blend of the real mixed with the extraordinary, and it offers nothing but pure delight every time I watch it!
3. Jenny: MONSTA X's 'Fighter'
Mostly, I chose this MV because of how ridiculous it is. Shownu is randomly dancing in prison (yes, I know it's supposed to be a continuation from "All In"), Wonho is welding without a shirt (which is hot but totally not safe), I.M is playing on a GameBoy surrounded by glowing teddy bears, and how can we forget about Jooheon's doctor scene? That stethoscope-spinning scene has become a sort of iconic scene, where even other idols found it hilarious and had to bring it up to Jooheon. "Fighter" is one of those story-revolving, symbolic MVs that's actually a part of a bigger arc which I don't really like, but it still stands by itself and is just on the right side of weirdly hot, so that it's my favorite this year.
4. Annie: G-Friend's 'Navillera'
Honestly, I don't watch that many MVs, but I did find this one particularly appealing. It was retro, but in a unique way. There was a fantastical element to it with all of the pretty colors and the girls' ambiguous facial expressions as they stare into the camera like dolls. It also captured the essence of fun, youthful friendship well as the girls enjoy time together skating and having a pool party. Although there was a youthfulness to it, there was also a sense of maturity, showing how the girls have blossomed into butterflies. I think, honestly, what I liked most about it was the simplicity and how they didn't seem like tryhards. Simple is what you'll get and simple is what you'll enjoy! But in no way is it cheap or crudely done!
5. Alice: BTS's 'Save Me'
This MV was the most 'raw' MV from BTS. There are no fancy outfits, concepts, backgrounds, or special effects but the group pulls off a captivating MV with music and dance. Not only is the MV enjoyable to watch but the song itself is great, too.
6. Cara: BTS's 'Blood, Sweat, and Tears'
Honestly, I was never a big fan of BTS until "Blood, Sweat & Tears". Not only is the song super catchy but the MV is also really cool. It's so artsy and the scenery is beautiful. Their choreography is on point, the concept, and just everything is perfect. The MV definitely had my full attention for 6 minutes, and I'll have to say this is the best MV of my choice in 2016.
7. Beans: ASTRO's 'Breathless'
This song and MV make me so! happy! It has this super fun and quirky and adorable concept where the members turn into bottled sodas! And then they have to endure everything that IOI's Choi Yoo Jung does to them while in their soda forms, from being stuck in the sand, to being put in coolers and plastic bags, and it. is. just. so. cute. and. fun. and. OMG. I. can.t!
8. Elisa: Taemin's 'Drip Drop'
I know it's labeled a 'performance video,' but Taemin's video for "Drip Drop" was the best MV of 2016 for me. The video is so straightforward that everything from the color of Taemin's turtleneck to the dancers' shadows add something to the frame. Taemin's styling and simple wardrobe don't take away from the stunning canyon setting either, but only complement the video's visual style. Can we also take a moment to appreciate that the song is called "Drip Drop", and the MV is set in a desert with clouds looming overhead? It's like the creator wanted to let you know the only moisture you need is Taemin and his moves. Not to mention the SHINee member's entertaining tempermental expressions and how he handles intricate choreography so refreshingly or how gorgeous the cinematography is. I love everything about this video.
9. Eric: B.A.P's 'Skydive'
This 10 minute mini-epic was the perfect MV for the album, giving us the story behind the concept. Not only that, but the gritty production stacked up well against full-blown dramas. Casting the boys as killers was a genius move. Dark, fast-moving and never predictable, this one gets my vote for best music video.
