TOP 10 BEST K-DRAMA MOMENTS IN 2016

2016 is coming to a close, and it's time to shine a light on the best moments in K-Drama this year. We've got a line-up of heavy hitters here, so let's take a look!

#10 MY SNUGGLY BEAR -- 'UNCONTROLLABLY FOND'

Before these two were broken, they were in high school together. Sadly, they were the best versions of themselves back then, and it's a pity they couldn't have stayed that way. Joon Young was a quick-witted prankster then as now, and roped No Eul into pretending they were a couple to throw off a determined lovestruck co-ed. They had so many antics packed into those few scenes that I squirted Coke out my nose more than once.

#9 THE WEIGHT OF THE TITLE "DAD" -- 'REPLY 1988'

There were tons of feelz in this show, just like all the other installments in the Reply series. I think one of the most touching was when Deok Sun, Bo Ra and No Eul made their own retirement plaque for Dad when he didn't get one from the bank where he worked. I think I teared up during Deok Seon's narration. It's little moments like this one that made this show great.

#8 LIKE BIRDS -- 'SCARLET HEART: RYEO'

It was only the second week, and Prince Jung got in trouble with the locals, earning a beating. They even came at him with axes and blades once they found out he was nobility. But it's Hae Soo to the rescue with a...tree branch? Hardly the most well-thought out plan, but I thought her valor was admirable, and the show was never better than when she stood up for herself and her friends. It also forged a life-long friendship between the two that was, sadly, little explored.

#7 BACKHUG -- 'CHEESE IN THE TRAP'

This one was great and needs a little setup to understand. Seol avoids Jung; she's not happy and feels he's ignoring her -- "I don't want to get involved yet I'm upset you won't come to me." Yeah, that'll work. No sooner does she think about it than she encounters Jung in the stairwell, rebuffing his attempts to talk to her. So he ambushes her with a backhug, then walks off. I thought that simple, quiet act showed how he felt with no reservations, no words needed.

#6 ARE YOU OKAY? -- 'HEY GHOST, LET'S FIGHT'

With moments ranging from cute and romantic to epic to absolute WTFery, 'Hey Ghost, Let's Fight' was buoyed by the performances, let's be honest.  Kim So Hyun gave some of her best performances in this drama. I think the 6th episode, where Bong Pal removes a cherry blossom petal from Hyun Ji's hair and she blushes brightly (with the aid of CGI), contained one of my favorite scenes. It's simple, but made the affection between the two obvious.

#5 MY JACKET NEEDED MORE COLOR -- 'ONE MORE HAPPY ENDING'

While I'm a romance nut, I also have a twisted sense of humor, which is why I remember this part so well. Soo Hyuk heads home after giving a girl the dear Jane treatment, only to find a drunk Mi Mo in front of her door. He tries to ensure she goes to sleep in her own flat safely. After giving him the wrong passcode for her door again and again, she hugs him and then yaks right down his back. I know I should have expected that, but I didn't, and busted up laughing. That's the reason this made the list.

#4 I'M REGRETTING IT NOW -- 'DESCENDANTS OF THE SUN'

While the romance was a major selling point, I think the bromance was just as good. And they established it early on, especially when Shi Jin and Dae Young used toy guns to take down a motorcycle thief. But the street gang encounter stood out best to me: equal parts funny and epic.

#3 THE SLAP-KISS -- 'W'

Any drama that involves switching worlds between a webtoon world and our own is awesome, and early on you get one of the better moments. Yeon Joo is stuck in the manhwa world and trying to end the episode and get back to the real world; she figures something important has to occur for this to happen. In a desperate attempt to end the episode she slaps Kang Cheol, but that doesn't work. Then she kisses him, figuring that will do the trick. His reaction is...unexpected.

#2 DR. FIGHTER -- 'DOCTORS'

While this had a lot of funny and cute moments that kept me coming back for more, I think Park Shin Hye stole the show from the first episode with her mad fighting skills; my personal fave was when she takes out a bunch of gangsters. Whatever else you can say about her, she has a mean high kick. Would you believe she'd never done a fight scene before? Her ending line is hilarious: "I'll treat everyone that I hurt!"

#1 IS THAT YOUR THING? -- 'GOBLIN'

A couple scenes in episode 5 struck me as incredibly funny when Grim Reaper is taking everything absolutely literally, with no subtext or knowledge of what's going on. Sunny's exasperated reactions are priceless, and even when she tries to roll with it, he still manages to deliver these awkward deadpan lines and crack me up...until he drops the bombshell at the end.

You have my list, along with the rankings. I'm sure you guys have your own ideas, too, and I'd love to hear 'em. In the meantime, I want to wish all of you out there a very happy new year.
