I think they did the 'Grandpa over flowers' concept quite well. And of course, they chose K-pop and Asia's no1 girl group. I am proud of our girl having this chance to appear in NBC.

HYOYEON (SNSD) 'cuddled' by SHATNER (TREK) - Sept. 2016

BigBlueagain krell Wednesday, September 7, 2016

Cuddled? She's laughing her ass off at him and he's terrified he squashed her.

zippys420 krell Wednesday, September 7, 2016

Hyoyeon's one foot hopping before the fall tells me she wanted to mate with Shatner. Maybe even have his children!

krell BigBlueagain Wednesday, September 7, 2016

Yes, SHATNER is *not* a 'flyweight' anymore! ... ;-)

krell zippys420 Wednesday, September 7, 2016

SHATNER was giving HYOYEON his 'ELOPE' move! ... ;-)

There are some comments that it was not that funny. It's a Reality Show, so perhaps it's not meant to specifically always be funny. What probably makes it more enjoyable to Americans, is that these 4 men are icons of American Culture. I grew up watching Henry Winkler portray "The Fonz" on Happy Days, I remember as a child getting to stay up late to watch William Shatner play "Captain Kirk" on the TV Show Star Trek, Cheering for George Foreman during his Championship Heavyweight Boxing battles, and I have seen many many many American Football touchdowns created by Terry Bradshaw leading the Pittsburgh Steelers. So, I can see how seeing these men interacting as regular people may not be as interesting or enjoyable to people from other cultures, but to an American like me, it's gold. :-)

They changed their title. Better late than never

1Minoz steadystrike Wednesday, September 7, 2016

Because Americans don't understand the phrase "Grandpa's over Flowers".

BigBlueagain 1Minoz Wednesday, September 7, 2016

Yup, we have no friggin clue what that means. I'm into Korean Pop culture and I still don't get it.

kittensmiles 1Minoz Wednesday, September 7, 2016

Could you explain what it means? I've heard of an anime called "Boys over Flowers", which I assumed meant that the person preferred boys over flowers, which seemed weird to me. Is there actually a meaning to it?

steadystrike kittensmiles Thursday, September 8, 2016

Hana Yori Dango means rice cakes over flowers in Japanese. During the flower festival, the temples offer sweet rice cakes skewered on a stick for visitors to view the flowers but people go there not to view the flowers but rather to get free food. The meaning of the phrase is practicality over aesthetics, practicality being the Dango and aesthetics being the flowers. It's better to br with a full stomach than full of flowers in your face. The original author used this phrase as a play on word. Her original title was supposed to be the literal translation Hana Yori Danshi, which means Boys over Flower but she didn't think her readers would get the joke and renamed it as the idiom, Hana Yori Dango. Once the literal translation wouldn't work with international readers they just retitled it to Boys Over Flowers elsewhere besides Japan. The remake has gotten so popular in Korea than it already did, that other shows begin to "borrow" the name of the international version of the title replacing Dango, or in this case Boy with words that might have some connection with the show itself, in this case being grandpa. So there you have it, hope it wasn't too confusing :)

First of all, thank you for all the time that must have taken. I think I get a little bit of it. I understand practicality over aesthetics, but I'm not sure how rice cakes got changed to boys. And are they just using the phrase to be cute, or does it actually tie in with the rice cakes?

steadystrike kittensmiles Thursday, September 8, 2016

They were just trying to be cute I guess
