Once the police arrived on the scene, Kim Sung Min's wife and son told police, "It was a minor argument" and left the home, saying they would spend the night at her parent's place.
About 10 minutes after, the wife called police again, saying, "My husband often talks about killing himself if he drinks. When we were arguing before, he said we should separate, so I'm worried that he might do something out of hand", and asked them to check the home once more.
At 1:55 PM KST on June 24, police discovered Kim Sung Min attempting to commit suicide by hanging his neck on a necktie in the bathroom.
Kim Sung Min was transported to the hospital immediately, but continues to be in a comatose state, with just his pulse beating.
In both 2011 and 2015, Kim Sung Min was charged with illegal use of philopon (a form of methamphetamine). He served 2 years and 6 months in prison for his first charge, and served 10 months in prison on top of a 4 year of probation sentence for his second charge. The actor had been released from his 10 month sentence back in January of 2016.
