Jimin apologized for the history quiz controversy that arose after the recent airing of AOA's reality show 'Channel AOA'.

As previously reported, viewers expressed disapproval at Jimin and Seolhyun's inability to recognize Korean historical figures during a history quiz on the show. It seems the backlash was enough to spur an apology from AOA's leader.

Jimin posted to Instagram:

"Hello, this is AOA's Jimin.
I took on the history quiz corner aired on OnStyle's 'Channel AOA' on May 3, and in that situation, I did not recognize Ahn Joong Geun's portrait. I even approached the subject lightly and showed an inappropriate attitude to many people.
As a celebrity in the public eye, I sincerely apologize for causing people to disapprove because of my playful mindset.
I apologize.
No excuse will cover my mistake.
Through this incident, I've learned that ignorance is the biggest mistake.
I give my sincerest apologies and will deeply reflect on my actions.
From now on, I'll do my best to have a knowledge of history I won't be embarrassed by not only as a celebrity, but as a Korean citizen.
Once again, I deeply apologize for my mistake. I'm sorry.
-posted by AOA's Jimin."

What are your thoughts on Jimin's apology and the controversy?

All of you who saying  history is not important... remember this one thing.. you will not stand at whatever country you are without the sacrifice of this old peoples who raise your country so you and your family can live a better future than them.. is like you dont remember the time and sacrifice your parent did to raise you.. please remember their sacrifice for you the One who raise your Country..

I just saw this. She apologized for this?? Seriously knetz. Get a life. I also don't know my country history lol. In fact, I don't even know my country so called leader's whole name. 😒 no one in this world is perfect duhh

4NIAB2UTYHONEY Monday, May 16, 2016

They don't have to apologize. I also don't know anything about  history cos I don't give a shit about it and I'm not gonna fucking apologize. I only care about the future. Jimin and Seolhyun fighting!

ionkyionky01 Sunday, May 15, 2016

I'm sorry but many of you guys don't understand the korean culture and society!!! For an asian person history knowledge is a must for all citizen. Not because to be smart but to remember and respect our ancestors. And like she said herself she's celebrity how has to be careful in everything she does!!! I do not want to spread hatred or so but she has to be more carefully about  such things. She and Seolhyun are def not stupid but both need to know a bit about their own history. If you want to hate me do it but admit it that you all know important personality of your countries' history !!!

juliedsb ionkyionky01 Sunday, May 15, 2016

An Jung-Geun is literally the national hero of Korea; everyone says his name first when they're asked who played the biggest role in Korea gaining independence. Do you think they'd be happy that another fellow Korean doesn't know the person to whom Korea owes for gaining independence and becoming a republic country it is now? They're upset at her as another fellow Korean citizen, not as a kpop star. It's funny how all these people are bashing Koreans for criticizing Jimin and Seolhyun while they're probably gonna get the every chance they get to bash Justin Bieber or Kim Kardashian if they don't know who George Washington is (because An Jung-Geun is on the same level as George Washington in Korea) These people are hypocrites. Thanks for understanding

ionkyionky01 juliedsb Thursday, May 19, 2016

Amen! I mean not only german ppl know who Hitler or Alber Einstein was or do you know Bismark?! Prob not but he "invented" our economy system =D For me basic knowledge so what ,for foreign ppl not necessary but for us it is indeed =D

deniell juliedsb Monday, May 30, 2016

Wrong you silly ass bitch. We laugh at celebrities but we don't demonize them and demand apologies. Americans actually cannot even compare to how patriotic South Koreans are. You Korean netizens are the most venomous people when it comes to demonizing people for stupid shit like this. If us Americans were to make fun of celebrities, it's just mockery but we would still accept them. You guys go to the point of ending their careers. Shut the fuck up you little bitch of an insignificantly small nation.

ionkyionky01 deniell Thursday, June 2, 2016

Wow... please watch your language! I never insulted you or the girls and I will never will do that! I only pointed out that a lot of asian countries are very picky about their history and nothing else, so stop . I know that the girls have a lot of work but knowing your own history as a korean citizen is a MUST and so accept my opinion !

buddy1 deniell Saturday, December 24, 2016

i am NOT from korea or any of the asian countries there but i know how important it is for them to know about the hystory there, so it´s actually their rules and we can´t do anything even though i am dissapointed as well, as an aoa´s fan but it´s their rules and we can´t do anything (even though not many people, are into hystory) we can´t do anything but keep in all that dissagreement....

jk_eyy Friday, May 13, 2016

Not everyboby is perfect. There are people who make mistakes and there are people who just try not to do some mistakes. In this occasion, AOA's Jimin and Seolhyun did approved that they kind of were not paying attention on the history lesson's at school, but is it enough for to spread a hate like this? I did not pay attention at the history class as well and got F. Actually I understand that they're idols in the public eye, but still. In the FIRST place they're human beings. Not everybody loves history, right? Honestly, I don't know about my history as well. Not everybody has to NERD or PERFECT. If they're good at singing, dancing than isn't it better than knowing history?? 😲

Xhzyo Friday, May 13, 2016

Just go back to your hole, Jimin. I already put cheese in there.

Danialthe_Elvis Xhzyo Friday, May 13, 2016

dude, chill There's no need to spread the hate like that, man...

vincentrob11 Thursday, May 12, 2016

Jimin! You don't need to apologize either! I told Seolhyun the same thing! If you didn't know, you didn't know! Don't let these ignorant selfish inconsiderate fake people bring you down to having to apologize!

heyfen306 vincentrob11 Thursday, May 12, 2016

That's the culture difference that you fail to understand because it's a serious matter for Korean citizens. They need to apologize if not their issue will be aggravated.

vincentrob11 heyfen306 Friday, May 13, 2016

Well, Korean citizens need to stop being critical and self-conscious about everything.

ygbad_boy vincentrob11 Friday, May 13, 2016

their history is very important because of several tragic incidents not only through war with North Korea but even during WWII... it's a cultural thing.

juliedsb vincentrob11 Sunday, May 15, 2016

more than it just being a history, the man whom Jimin could not remember is one of the biggest heroes of Korea. I'm not getting into details, but Korea was under Japan's imperial rule for the longest time (why they hate Japan so much), and An Jung-Geun fought for Korea's independence and helped in Korea gaining independence, hence Korea's national hero. He's like George Washington of Korea. Who do you think you are, to bash Koreans for having pride in their national hero, and being shocked at someone who got that national hero wrong? I wish I could say something ignorant about your country and see how you feel. Koreans have the right to be upset, you have no right to bash the country if you don't know a shit about it

vincentrob11 juliedsb Monday, May 16, 2016

The country isn't small. I'm sure there are more and more people who don't know this person. Everyone isn't taught the same education.

ygbad_boy vincentrob11 Monday, May 16, 2016

that's a very weak argument. He/she just told you that this person is like the Korean George Washington. Even poor people in the US know who is George Washington. There's no excuse for that.

vincentrob11 ygbad_boy Monday, May 16, 2016

Well, Korea must be very stubborn, strict, naive, and self-conscious about everything what women make little mistakes for. It was just a little mistake, nothing a big deal of. If they didn't know it, they didn't know it. That's it. They're going to complain about every little thing they think women are doing wrong in Korea while they praise and defend the men who do the same thing and think it was just a little mistake.

ygbad_boy vincentrob11 Monday, May 16, 2016

don't play the sexist card where it doesn't belong, mate. This has nothing to do with her as woman this is because she couldn't name ONE of Korea's most important and revered national heroes. Do you even know what this man do for his country and his fellow countrymen and women? He saved a lot of them. If you knew something about their history you would know the horrible tragedies they endured through the Korean War and the WWII with the Japanese occupation. That's why a lot ocf people called it on her and Seoulhyun, not because they're women but because they were too dumb or ignorant to name one of their culture's greatest heroes. That's it, no sexism or anything like that for this whole issue. Take it or leave it, vincent.

vincentrob11 ygbad_boy Monday, May 16, 2016

Well you're entitled to your own opinion and I am entitled to mine.

NalsaYbur vincentrob11 Tuesday, May 17, 2016

Sorry but they r korean idols who make most of their income in korea, they need to appeal to koreans or there will BE no aoa. I am an elvis but ppl should stop making prejudices saying koreans this and koreans that. Being korean i am slightly ofdended. Plus it wasnt just that they didnt know who he was, they made fun of it by saying Japanese sounding names and such.

Rebel_Patriot Thursday, May 12, 2016

Give it a rest you pathetic miserable assholes. When every last person in Korea can name these people from a photo, then they will have the right to shit on Jimin and Seolhyun about not knowing. They are girl group members... their job is to sing, dance, be cute and pretty, and make people happy... not be fucking historians.

anomynous Rebel_Patriot Thursday, May 12, 2016

how about you go read up who Ahn Joong Geun is and how important he is in the korean history then come tell me why two native korean adults should not know a simple korean history that even I (korean-american) know.. it doesnt matter if you're a girl group or not.. if not for that man, there would be no kpop for you to enjoy

Rebel_Patriot anomynous Thursday, May 12, 2016

And as I said, when every other 21 and 25 year old woman in South Korea is verified to have been able to recognize the photo and identify the historical figure, then picking on Jimin and Seolhyun for their lack of recognition would be justified. Tired of the double standard heaped on girl group members for every conceivable jealous butthurting. And Ahn's act of assassination did not prompt an uprising or guerrilla war against the Japanese, or lead to Korea's liberation. Ahn killed Ito in 1909... Japan's official annexation of Korea went forward the next year and continued unchallenged until 1945 when the US defeated Japan ending WW2. Ahn is no doubt a powerful symbol and a iconic figure in Korean history, but he didn't change that history, and he had no impact on ensuring "there would be no kpop for you to enjoy." He is extremely revered by Koreans and deservedly so, but you are inflating his actual impact on history.

Sophia_Sone4ever Rebel_Patriot Thursday, May 12, 2016

This is no double standard actually. Male idols also get attacked for not knowing certain things or for certain matters. And this one is their faults for not knowing ya know a general and common sense. I m a international fan but Even I know popular figure in history. And I don't even connection with SK except for a couple drop of SK blood. This one is like not knowing who is Martin Luther King or who is George Washingto, even students who fail every classes in my school known them and their contribution. You can't a blame a person if they say your a dumbass for not knowing who are them. The best thing to do is just admit it and apologize cos apologizing doesn't degrade her instead it's make her a greater person and plus she is not just any girl. She is a public figure who represent Korea and if she doesn't speak up for this matter then what will the next generation kids will think "oh even a public figure didn't care about our history so why do we need to study". Don't feel bad or defend jimin for apologizing but instead feel proud that she apologize and bravely admit for her mistake. It's makes her a greater person and plus the public favor her a lot more now

juliedsb Rebel_Patriot Sunday, May 15, 2016

It just goes to show how ignorant you are for just insulting every single person who bashed Jimin and Seolhyun. You think they're getting hated on just cuz they didn't bother to remember every single person in Korean history? Ahn Joong Gun is one of the most important national heroes in all of Korea's past that elementary schools teach. Knowing him is just like knowing who George Washington or whoever the national hero of USA is--he was one of the biggest supporters of Korea's freedom when it was under Japan's imperial rule. Every Korean believes he was one of the biggest causes for Korea's independence, and you think THEY're the ones dumb for being shocked that another fellow KOREAN doesn't know someone that important? They know and understand that not everyone knows every single person taught in history. Wait, you probably wouldn't know because you haven't been to a Korean website and can't read or write what they say. But along with Lee Soon Shin (the general who won battles against Japan) and King Sejong (the king who created Korean language), An Jung-Geun is a must-know person that every Korean should be aware of from elementary school onward. You really are dumb. You think you're right and full of justice, defending every single kpop star you like whether they are right or wrong, and you bash every single Korean fan not knowing how they feel. They may not be always right, and sometimes they go over the board, but this time, Jimin and Seolhyun had better apologized if they were fully South Koreans who were born and raised in the country.

Rebel_Patriot juliedsb Sunday, May 15, 2016

Enough with the bullshit analogies. Ahn may be an important symbol but he was not analogous to George Washington. The only analogy that fits is Gavrilo Princip, the Bosnian Serb who assassinated an Austrian Archduke leading to WW2. In fact Ahn's action probably accelerated the Japanese takeover of Korea. Ahn assassinated an elderly Japanese official who was forced from his post as the first Japanese Resident-General of Korea position by the Imperial Army because he SUPPORTED Korean autonomy. Ahn did not lead a rebellion, an army, or any insurrection, and he didn't lead Korea as an independent nation. Ahn's act of assassination and subsequent execution did not inspire any Korean insurrection or resistance. In fact, the year after Ahn assassinated Ito, Korea was formally annexed to Japan without incident. And for the next 35 years Korea was a model colony. There were never any large scale rebellions or insurrections. No Korean partisan army ever formed within Korean territory and no Korean forces ever liberated an inch of Korean territory. The Japanese colonial government and garrison in Korea never lost control of a shred of Korean territory until 1945. The only thing that finally brought an end to Japanese rule in Korea was the US defeat of Japan in WW2. And even after the formal surrender, Japanese forces remained in control of Korea until US forces landed and the Japanese surrendered INTACT to General Hodge on Sept. 7, 1945. So spare me the histrionics and history rewrite. Unfortunately, since there was no meaningful or large scale resistance to Japanese rule to glorify, Koreans had to invent whatever heroes they could. But Ahn had no impact on defeating Japan or liberating Korea. Maybe Koreans are fed propaganda and historical revisionism to paint a prettier picture than reality, but don't expect others to buy into it.

juliedsb Rebel_Patriot Sunday, May 15, 2016

ok, so don't have the history accurately. But you're off the point. While I talked about history, that's not the biggest point of my argument. I'm saying Koreans are criticizing her on not knowing a basic figure that majority of Koreans are aware of as an influential and important figure in history. I dpn't get why you're bashing Koreans if you don't know anything they're saying right now. An Jung-Geun isn't someone from middle of the history textbook no one can remember. If you were shown a picture of George Washington or Abraham Lincoln, you'd be able to name them right away because their faces are so well-known(asides from what they've did). Koreans are criticizing her for not knowing a figure like that and are telling her to study up on the basics. You are bashing every fan out there in Korea just because of the minority wherever you got the source from that cursed her and bashed her and called her names and whatnot. But majority of Koreans believe that even if you can't recall every single thing he did, she should be able to as another fellow Korean identify who he is.

Rebel_Patriot juliedsb Monday, May 16, 2016

Bottom line is that it has no bearing on her role as an entertainer. And as I said originally, when every last 20 something Korean can do as was demanded from Jimmy and Seolhyun, then they will have earned the right to crucify these two angels. Face it - Koreans are jealous of anyone who succeeds and will attempt to tear them down for any reason in a pathetic and futile attempt to make themselves feel superior.

Sophia_Sone4ever Rebel_Patriot Monday, May 16, 2016

I can memorize the faces of all the famous Korean historical figure and I m no celeb nor a Korean

Rebel_Patriot Sophia_Sone4ever Monday, May 16, 2016

Good for you... no knowledge is wasted, but memorizing Korean historical figures will not exactly win you a scholarship to Harvard. In the grand scheme of things Ahn, and nearly all historical Koreans have had zero impact on global history. Ahn did not even influence Korean history. His legend is a political creation to contrast against the reality that the vast majority of Koreans between 1905 and 1945 were passive and accepting of Japanese rule, and many actively supported it. And as far as all this relates to AOA or any other girl group... from a young age their education is interrupted and fragmented. Jimmy and Seolhyun did not have the opportunity to rack up the classroom hours that most people their age have accumulated. Maybe they were on tour when the Ahn class came up. They should get a pass, not a firing squad.

Sophia_Sone4ever Rebel_Patriot Monday, May 16, 2016

Ya know , I won't actually blame people who actually think this is wrong of jimin and seolhyun to not know their history like you soda it's does make sense but I will defiantly blame people who called them stupid for this. But actually you never how much ahn has impacted until you go to their country or ask the people of that country and basically everyone of the people in that country actually thing ahn as a hero for creating a path of independence. ( I won't really go deep cos I only know the basic fact about ahn not the full history cos I m not in history class yet to know everything ). Even thou to foreignor ahn action might not seem like a big deal of anything but it was for them and we can't compare two country because obviously they have people who they prioritize. Like for native country we have the same person who did the similar task as ahn did and almost everybody in my country know and worship him ( maybe ) for doing that. And yes some netizen are going overboard and I m assuming they are haters but jimin and seolhyun admit what they did was wrong and apologized so that the end of the matter. We can't really think the whole country is lunatic for looking up to and prioritize a person who may seem to not have impacted that much.

juliedsb Rebel_Patriot Monday, May 16, 2016

from your comments, it just sounds like you have a personal grudge against Korea. Why are you getting into so much about history and worked up about how Koreans are reacting? I bet you would be one of the very person to bash an American celebrity like Nicki Minaj or whoever if someone showed them a picture of Bill Clinton and they couldn't name him. Like I said earlier, Koreans were shocked by her not being able to name him. You literally are calling all of Koreans ignorant and insulting them, just on what grounds? Do you have proof that they said that? Can you read, write, or speak Korean? Because they are NOT saying what you are. None of them said ANYTHING about being jealous, no one, at least not from what I have seen, told her to die or called her names. People who called her names are getting insulted as well, and AOA fans are still defending Jimin and Seolhyun. And you still have the right to group an entire natioin and bash it for what, remarking and criticizing someone, who not as a celebrity but as another Korean, should know the basic historical figures? "Face it - Koreans are jealous of anyone who succeeds and will attempt to tear them down for any reason in a pathetic and futile attempt to make themselves feel superior." Prove that, because what you are saying sounds completely ignorant right now. What country are you from anyways? Let me bash your entire nation because I'm pretty sure from what you are saying, your entire country must be just as ignorant as you are and racist.

저기요... 재발 이러지 마세요... 우리 걍 다 좋게 살자 웅?

jono_marsh Rebel_Patriot Tuesday, May 24, 2016

Wow, I think it is really childish to make a girl cry like this. Why can't people just grow up and accept other's mistakes. If she didn't recognise the guy then say "Hey, this is Ahn, he is actually a big deal so you better learn a bit about him". Nah, instead "Lets lynch the traitor!".

Rebel_Patriot Sophia_Sone4ever Tuesday, May 24, 2016

What path to independence? Ahn killed an irrelevant old man and was executed for it. There was no Korean revolt or uprising in response to the assassination or Ahn's subsequent execution. Korea was annexed the next year in 1910 and remained a relatively well-behaved Japanese colony until 1945. Korea got it's independence when the US Tenth Army's XXIV Corps landed in Incheon on September 8, 1945 and Japanese forces formally surrendered to Lt. General John R. Hodge the next day. My issue is with the baseless rewriting of history to simply invent history that is more agreeable to Korean national pride and ego. This Korean self-liberation myth is bullshit and as a US military Vet myself it bothers me personally because I know many WW2 Vets who served in the Asia-Pacific Theater... some of the 3 million+ who served and fought to defeat Japan from Pearl Harbor to Okinawa... these Vets and the 111,606 who died are all but erased from Korean history and replaced by some fantasy. So yes, I will speak up in the face of revisionist history.

Rebel_Patriot juliedsb Tuesday, May 24, 2016

Only if a celebrity acts in a malicious or intentionally offensive manner should they be crucified, American, Korean, or anyone. Jimin and Seolhyun acted neither maliciously or with intent to offend. That said, as I replied to, Sophia_Sone4ever my problem with Korea is with their constant attempts to rewrite history that never happened in order to create a fantasy mythology that is nowhere near reality. Ahn is a one example. Korean ego and pride is not served by reality... the reality that their liberation and independence was given to them by others, and not won by themselves. So they create myths like Ahn to compensate. Only it doesn't fly if scrutinized against historical reality. But since it is more heroic and romantic than the truth, Koreans buy into the lies because it strokes their pride and egos.

Sophia_Sone4ever Rebel_Patriot Tuesday, May 24, 2016

But ya know that's their choice whether they wanna look up to whoever they want to like its their country and their people. I agree that US played a big role but US and SK is very close country with friendly relationship. But as I said before that Ahn guy might be as equivalent as Martin Luther King Jr. To the Korean people cos that their choice and it's different with every country, you can't just curse out a whole country for what they believe and I don't think that they are gonna change their belief or stuff just because someone from another country said something, tbh every country look up and praise their own people like if you see any other country other than Korea too. No country want to bow their head down to another country just because they helped them for independence, they have their own pride too right ? If you see any country in the world , all of them only look up and prioritize their own people because for them it's a proud thing that their people did something for them thou it didn't made much impact but at least the person tried. Before you tell me I m defending them , then let me tell you , I m defending nobody and I m an American but I only saying what I think

im sorry i gave up my childhood and going to school to be a pop star only to have my fans shit on me for being not good at history.(a subject most people arent good at)

Sophia_Sone4ever Thursday, May 12, 2016

I find it funny how some of you are saying "why is she apologizing" and all. Like imagine you go around the street and people ask you who is George bush , Abraham Lincoln or Martin Luther King and you answers you don't know then obviously people are gonna say you're a dumbass for sure and that not their fault but it's your fault that you don't know but at that case it's better to acknowledge you're wrong and apologize because saying sorry doesn't make you a person lower than anybody but it's make you the greater person and that's person will also say sorry to you for calling you dumbass, it's as simple as this. Like people should stop defending them for apologizing when it's obvious it's jimin and seolhyun fault and plus they are public figure so if they don't apologize the what will the next generation learn.

I know it's hard to memorize but like I said its a common knowledge and you don't need to memorize it.
