The Chinese media got ahold of a video clip that fans had captured which shows the singer throwing a cigarette butt out of his car window. Fans had allegedly followed the vehicle T.O.P was riding in, chasing after the car and shouting all sorts of affectionate phrases. When the car stopped at a light, that's allegedly when T.O.P rolled down the window to throw out a cigarette butt. The singer also formed a heart sign at the fans after he discarded the cigarette.
Netizens have responded to this incident with, "I heard his character is usually like this..does that heart sign actually mean 'eat this!'?" "I'm shattered......." "If a female idol were like that, then she'd be kicked off the programs and would be under total lockdown but [T.O.P] isn't even coming up on real-time searches lolol there isn't even one article on Naver about T.O.P forreals lolol."
When the incident blew up and became a controversy, T.O.P officially made an apology to all the fans according to a report by OSEN. He said, "I'm sorry to all the fans for showing such a disappointing side of me. I'm just embarrassed. I always dispose of cigarette butts in an ashtray, but because it was another person's car, I made a big mistake. I don't have any excuses."
