Inspecting the MV: INFINITE's 'Back'

INFINITE

INFINITE's new music video for "Back"stays true to the group's signature dramatic releases, complementing their powerful vocals and boyish good looks. There's plenty of ass-kicking action, as Woollim Entertainment reported the members attended martial arts classes for two weeks to learn the sequences.

And my, does it show.

The MV follows the storyline of a young girl who appears to have been kidnapped, naturally by a group of no good, ratchettattoo-covered, red zip-up-clad thugs. And so who but the members of INFINITE can be counted on to wreak some major damage and rescue the girl in distress?

"Where am I? Who am I?" - wonders Girl in Distress

And so all seven members of INFINITE arrive (assumedly through means of one--just one--motorcycle) to rescue her. Now I must ask, is this carpooling ingenuity at its finest or is the motorcycle simply sitting there for our viewing pleasure? We may never know.

Upon arriving on location, it's only right to stand outside and stare. Don't do anything, just stare. Let's be honest, if you look that good, you're not only doing yourself a favor by staring beautifully and intensely while striking subtle poses that are glorious. You're doing us all a favor.

On a side note, did anyone notice Sungjong bringing the umbrella? Or Dongwoo holding the skateboard?Better yet, perhaps how those two items fit into the storyline?

Once they arrive in the warehouse, they come face-to-face with the perpetrators - men in red hoods, who, apparently, all really like the color red. Unfortunately, the man sitting on the hood of the car clearly didn't get the memo regarding the dress code, but the rest of the group will let him hang. He's aiite.

And here follows a string of ass-whoopings, courtesy of INFINITE.

There are no amount of jeans too tight in this world to keep L from doing his thing.

Ah, yes. So that's what the umbrella was for.

and the skateboard.

"Taking off my beanie because ain't nothing getting in my way today."

And granted this is a MV, there are plenty of dance sequences with backdrops that tie into the overall mood of MV.

"Hi," waves awkwardly

"All peasants, please make your way to the back"

Fabulous.

Then basically, the scenes flash back to simpler times when, you know, no one got kidnapped. The girl, played by Kim Hyang Gi, portrays Sunggyu's younger sister, and like any younger sister dealing with an overprotective older brother, it doesn't seem like wanting to impress him is something she'll lose sleep over...

for she has a particular someone else in mind (don't we all).

I digress, but the tattoo art in this MV are awfully fruity. It appears this man has a tattoo of a moth(?) on his left arm. Perhaps he thinks it looks frightening or maybe it's an insect that carries a lot of meaning for him. To each his own, I suppose.

"nuuuuuu"

The MV ends rather vaguely with one side having no advantage over the other. Both sides look battle-worn (but still kickin'), the girl is still very much kidnapped, the members of INFINITE still look glorious in their beat-up radiance, and the men covered in tasteless tattoos still look tacky.

The MV wasn't anything entirely grand in scale or novel in its content (good guy chases bad guy, with helpless girl caught in the middle of it all - now where have I seen that before..?). Even so, I found myself playing it on repeat, be it because of the catchy song or, you know, the members' faces. "Back" distinguishes itself from some of INFINITE's other releases because it carries more emotion. The lyrics implore someone to come back and save me, and the tune conveys the yearning fittingly. This time around, I feel the song definitely saved the MV as it made the MV cohesive and emotionally charged.

The song and MV tie in beautifully, making for one of INFINITE's more mature releases, that surely, will be making its way into our summer playlists.
