allkpop TV Guide: Nice Guy Ep. 3

Official Synopsis: Betrayed by his girlfriend Han Jae Hee (Park Si Yeon), Kang Ma Roo (Song Joong Ki) uses Seo Eun Gi (Moon Chae Won), an heiress who has lost her memory, to exact his revenge.

Ratings: With a 3.9% rating increase, KBS's 'Nice Guy' is challenging MBC's 'Arang and the Magistrate' for the first place position as both 'Nice Guy' and 'Arang and the Magistrate' achieved a 13.8% rating. 'Nice Guy' had encountered issues with a spelling error in its title during the beginning of its broadcast as the title was written as 'Cha-kan Guy' rather than its correct spelling 'Chak-han Guy'. Although producers explained it was to symbolize Ma Roo's mask as a nice guy, many viewers criticized the title and producers ultimately had to correct its spelling before the third episode. With that issue resolved, it seems 'Nice Guy' is prepared to rise to the top in ratings.SBS' 'To the Beautiful You' came in last with a 4.2% rating.

Recap of Ep. 3: Rewinding before the ending motorcycle scene of episode two, we focus on a protest from Tae San workers yelling to out Eun Gi as they throw eggs and angrily swarm around her. After cleaning herself up, Eun Gi pulls out her motorcycle riding clothes and a Barbie doll.

Meanwhile, flashing back to Ma Roo's encounter with Jae Hee in the investigation room, Ma Roo asks Jae Hee, "Can I ask a question? What kind of world is it? Just what kind of world does madam live in that makes an innocent person subservient, intimidated, lose rationality, give up on life...", to which Jae Hee replies coldly, "Would you be able to understand even if I explained it?"

Jumping to the motorcycle scene, Eun Gi loses hold of the branch, but Ma Roo catches her just in time. Although Eun Gi is safe, she frantically tries to retrieve her Barbie doll as she screams "Mom". Using a rope to anchor himself, Ma Roo goes down to retrieve the doll but falls down the mountain as the rope breaks loose. (Man, this guy's luck.) Eun Gi waits in the hospital as she is told Ma Roo will be able to recover quickly. Entering the hospital room, Eun Gi begins to question Ma Roo's intentions asking why he risked his life for her despite being strangers. Ma Roo cuts her off as he asks if her parents taught her not to say "thank you" or "sorry", astounding Eun Gi with his bluntness.

Meanwhile, Jae Hee ponders Eun Gi's conversation with her father as Eun Gi's father threatens that he can easily hand over the company to Jae Hee and her son. She puts her dream of taking over the company into action during their family dinner. As Eun Gi tells her father (Kim Young Chul) she will be able to be a donor for his transplant surgery, Jae Hee incurs the chairman's sympathy by stating she can donate as she is not important to the family. She continues playing with his sympathy as she slyly complains about not being treated as an actual family member. The chairman decides to change the situation with a wedding ceremony.

Eun Gi, angered by Jae Hee's antics after learning of the ceremony, discovers the Barbie doll her mother had left her with. After discovering Ma Roo had returned the doll and her gift, she searches for him in the hospital but finds out that he was discharged. Ma Roo returns home to find Jae Gil (Lee Kwang Soo) and his new girl (Kim Ye Won). Although Jae Hee is about to enter Ma Roo's home, lawyer Ahn stops her (and good riddance. Ma Roo doesn't need you anymore). As Ma Roo leaves, he finds Eun Gi who questions him on his neighborhood and its associated lifestyle. Ma Roo asks Eun Gi if she's interested in her, but she scoffs at the idea and explains that she just wants to pay her debt. Ma Roo leans in and says he'll forgive her debt.

Ma Roo receives a frantic call from his sister Choco (Lee Yoo Bi) who explains that her birth mother's situation is a mess as there is an abusive man there. As Ma Roo is about to quickly leave, Eun Gi barges into his car and explains she wants to talk to him. As the two drive off, Eun Gi asks what Ma Roo wants from her since he rejected her gift, and Ma Roo asks Eun Gi what she would do if he tried to seduce her.

The two arrive at their destination, and Eun Gi remains as she witnesses the fight between Ma Roo, the abusive man, and Choco's mother. After the fight ends, Choco's mother drags Choco to Ma Roo and tells him that she won't take care of Choco and demands he takes her back. Although Choco at first protests, Ma Roo angrily yells at Choco to pack.

Meanwhile, Jae Hee goes to meet Lawyer Ahn and explains her past with Ma Roo. Lawyer Ahn drives her home and asks Jae Hee why she told him her secrets despite knowing he could possibly tell the chairman. Jae Hee explains shortly that she knows he liked her and kisses him. Watching from behind is Ma Roo in his car, with Eun Gi and Choco sleeping. After Lawyer Ahn leaves, Ma Roo comes out of his car and wakes up Eun Gi. A shocked Jae Hee watches as Eun Gi, who notices Jae Hee, asks, "Let's meet again. I've suddenly become interested in you. Let's meet again. Tomorrow [and] the day aftertomorrow," to which Ma Roo responds to by smirking.

kdramacrazy's Thoughts:

[ Note : This post reflects the opinions of the author, not necessarily those of allkpop.]

Have your tissues ready, everyone. Because I'm sure I'll be bawling my eyes out for thetumultuousrelationship between Ma Roo and Eun Gi. If only they could live in a happy world and have a beautiful relationship and go on cute dates, while us viewers can use pitchforks to kick Jae Hee out of the picture. Sigh. The chemistry between Ma Roo and Eun Gi was not only sizzling, but also opens up the vulnerable side of both characters as each has a brittle persona. Eun Gi sleeping in the car and watching Ma Roo's family situation with sympathetic eyes, while Ma Roo smiles as he notices both his sister and Eun Gi sleeping together. And I loved that the plot moved forward with Eun Gi making theinitiativeto begin the relationship with Ma Roo to mess with Jae Hee. Although we can clearly see Eun Gi is starting to develop feelings for Ma Roo quicker than he is, she's not vulnerable to blinding love (yet) and knows how to move the game pieces. While the synopsis made it seem that Ma Roo would use Eun Gi's love without her knowing, it's quite interesting to see that Eun Gi is the one who offered to do so. And how the amnesia will play into this will make this only more exciting (and foreboding).

While we're all getting our tissues, let's please get a pitchfork to protest catty Jae Hee and annoying Choco. Jae Hee, Jae Hee, Jae Hee. I had a bit of sympathy for you, yes I did, because you had a hard life and you didn't attack our poor Ma Roo. Yes, you let him take the blame, and you abandoned him to marry an old man. But we can forgive you a tiny bit because you had a difficult childhood. But now you want more money? And not only are you satisfied with playing with the Chairman's heart, but you're ready to play with Lawyer Ahn's heart? And why the heck are you cold to Ma Roo. Then you're shameless enough to return to his home to see him? No. Jae Hee, I'm done with you. You're on my blacklist, and I hope that you suffer. And Choco, please don't bother your brother and be rebellious. He already has enough to handle.

I also appreciate that Ma Roo doesn't have ameticulouslyplanned revenge plan because Ma Roo's hatred towards Jae Hee isn't fully explained. Yes, there are multiple reasons including Jae Hee framing Ma Roo as a blackmailer, Ma Roo blaming Jae Hee for his sister'shospitalization, and Jae Hee marrying the CEO, but I'm hoping for Ma Roo to be more vocal about it. The police scene, although it may seem random in its placement, was vital in seeing Ma Roo's anger and the initiation of his "revenge" against Jae Hee. I'm also hoping for more details on Jae Hee's character. Yes, I hate her, and I will probably hate her until she meets her demise, but I'm confused about the two faces of Jae Hee. Why was she so mean to Ma Roo in the police station as she could have just have blatantly ignored his question only to later visit Ma Roo to most likely apologize? If we could delve into Ma Roo and Jae Hee's thoughts even more, it would not only heighten the conflict but develop the characters further.

And here's Moon Chae Won doing the "Gangnam Style" horse dance to help cheer us up about the ups and downs of her relationship with Ma Roo.
