allkpop TV Guide: Big Ep. 9-10

Official Synopsis: 18-year-old Kang Kyung Joon's (Shin Won-Ho) spirit suddenly becomes transplanted into the body of 30-year-old Seo Yoon Jae (Gong Yoo). Seo Yon Jae is a successful doctor who is engaged to high school teacher Gil Da Ran (Lee Min Jung). Gil Da Ran just so happens to be the teacher of 18-year-old Kang Gyung Joon. More problems ensue when 30-year-old Seo Yoon Jae falls in love with another woman.

Ratings: For the July 2nd broadcast, MBC's 'Light and Shadow' remained in first place with a stable 19.2%, while SBS' 'The Chaser' dropped slightly to a 13.1% rating. KBS' 'Big' achieved similar ratings in the 8% range with an 8.2%. As 'Light and Shadow' aired its last episode, it brought in a 19.6% rating, while 'The Chaser' and 'Big' remained stagnant with a 13.5% and 8.1%. With 'Light and Shadow' finishing its 64-episode broadcast, 'Golden Time' will air, starring Hwang Jung Eum and Lee Seon Kyun, on July 9th. Ratings will most likely shift around a bit. It'll be interesting to see if viewers will jump to different stations.

Recap of Ep. 9: While Kyung Joon and Da Ran rush to the hospital, abandoning their honeymoon plans, Kyung Joon's body starts seizing up, falling to the ground. Alarming the nurses, Se Young examines him and notices no difference, much to Kyung Joon's disappointment. As the two bicker about the honeymoon, Kyung Joon drives away, abandoning Da Ran, who resorts to going to a spa overnight. Ma Ri (miss A's Suzy) decides to move in to Kyung Joon's house, with the belief that she's married to Kyung Joon's spirit. As Kyung Joon comes home downtrodden, he's shocked by Ma Ri's sudden ghostlike appearance and even more struck by the room decorated with Ma Ri's face to keep Kyung Joon in check with his feelings for Da Ran.

While Kyung Joon waits for Da Ran, drawing the twoon a poster of the Great Wall of China, Da Ran is eating eggs in the spa, which is where her family is. Da Ran is almost caught by Choong Shik (Baek Sung Hyun), but escapes successfully. However, Choong Shik notices Kyung Joon walking outside, leaving Kyung Joonto explain that he had to tend to an emergency patient andthatDa Ran went to China alone. Kyung Joon is invited to stay overnight in Da Ran's room, where he notices her box with items related to Yoon Jae. After Kyung Joon tells Da Ran to come over to his home, he brings her leftover food.

Meanwhile, Se Young meets up with Yoon Jae's mother, who plans to depart to America soon. After hearing that Yoon Jae had abruptly abandoned the honeymoon for a patient named Kyung Joon, Yoon Jae's mother confirms that it is the child Yoon Jae's father is looking for. However, Yoon Jae's mother doesn't tell him about the patient as she has no wish to look for that child.

Da Ran comes to pick up Kyung Joon from her house after Kyung Joon was able to retrieve all his items back from his uncle and aunt. However, Da Ran and Kyung Joon begin to bicker again after Kyung Joon sees Da Ran bringing in Yoon Jae's stuff to their home. Clearing out Yoon Jae's clothes from his room, Kyung Joon demands that he and Da Ran live separate lives. Although Da Ran is angry at Kyung Joon, she notices a photo of Kyung Joon and her mother. Although Da Ran tries to reconcile with him, Kyung Joonstill holds a grudge. However, he decides to stop being childish and leaves theater tickets for her below the bread he bought. Excited, Da Ran is about to head out when she meets up with Ma Ri, who switches the movie tickets she had for Kyung Joon with the theater ticket. After Kyung Joon finds out what happened, he abandons Ma Ri and heads to the movies. Kyung Joon hands an earbudto her, and he and Da Ran listen to Yoon Jae's walkman, which hefixed. Da Ran then starts to acknowledge her attraction for Kyung Joon.

Recap of Ep. 10: After Da Ran confesses that she liked Kyung Joon, she becomes flustered when Kyung Joon takes off his earbuds. During the whole movie, she becomes even more nervous and tries to amend herself when Kyung Joon tells her he heard her confession. Da Ran explains that she only meant that she liked it when Kyung Joon arrived at the theater, to which Kyung Joon replies not to cling onto him. After eating dinner and talking with Kyung Joon's uncle about Kyung Joon's father, the two make panda bears out of white, stuffed bears to try to imitate Chinese souvenirs.

Meanwhile, Se Young meets with Yoon Jae's mother and takes a hair strand to test the DNA. The DNA shows a perfect match between Kyung Joon and Yoon Jae's mother. Kyung Joon tells Da Ran how he had never met his father and only has the picture of the cherubs as evidence of his father. Da Ran wants to help find him, but Ma Ri decides to take the matter out of Da Ran's hand. As Kyung Joon begins to worry that he's becoming a burden on Da Ran, Da Ran grapples with her feelings for Kyung Joon, as she realizes her heart beats faster not for Yoon Jae, but for Kyung Joon.

Yoon Jae's father comes to Korea and meets an art professor. As the professor looks over the 'Miracle' book, which tells the story of Kyung Joon and Yoon Jae, who share the same parents. Yoon Jae's mother explains to Se Young that Kyung Joon was born to save Yoon Jae's life when he was sick as a child. While the art professor looks over the book, Kyung Joon and his body both experience a momentary out-of-body experience as their souls revisit their own bodies momentarily. Da Ran comes running to Kyung Joon and begins crying in relief after she realizes Kyung Joon still remains in Yoon Jae's body. However, Kyung Joon believes she's crying out of disappointment.

Kyung Joon talks with Da Ran about the inevitable switching back. As Da Ran acknowledges that returning to their original bodies would cause them pain, Kyung Joon tells Da Ran that he would disappear from her side easily.

kdramacrazy's Thoughts:

[Note : This post reflects the opinions of the author, and not necessarily those ofallkpop.]

Man. And I thought the drama was finally going somewhere with Da Ran's struggle to acknowledge her feelings for Kyung Joon. I felt like we already went through many circles around Kyung Joon trying to stay away from Da Ran (but we all know how unsuccessful those attempts will be). Although I love Da Ran's emotional confusion and her tearful acknowledgement that she loves Kyung Joon, the ending left me a little disappointed and frustrated because Da Ran will once again try to deny her feelings for Kyung Joon since Kyung Joon will (try to) stay away from her, and it'll leave us back at square one. If this week's episode had ended with Da Ran's confession that she's becoming confused or something to give Kyung Joon a hint, it would have left me more excited for next week's episode.

Speaking of needing hints, the whole misunderstanding between Kyung Joon and Da Ran was cute, mostly on Kyung Joon's part, but just made me want to shake the screen in frustration. Not only that, but Ma Ri has become even more annoying. I feel like she has no significant role/part in the drama minus being a nuisance (although I like Suzy's attempts at evil laughs). Her character is pretty much a forced obstacle between Kyung Joon and Da Ran's relationship and has no greater context.

And the whole family surrogate plot. I am not excited for the episode when Kyung Joon realizes the whole mess he's in. Not only does everything he knows change, but there will be tears, melodrama, crying, and even more crying the day he realizes he was just a backup child to Yoon Jae. What I have always loved about this drama, even though it has been slow, is Kyung Joon's development as an adult and becoming more mature. But the Kyung Joon we know now doesn't have the confidence nor strength to cope with the whole convoluted family drama, as he still has trouble dealing with his mother's murder. I do hope I get to see more cute moments and actually see Da Ran and Kyung Joon date before the melodrama creeps in.
