Something's fishy about Family Outing

Posted by lawlietta4 pts Sunday, November 1, 2009

If you're an avid fan of a certain Korean celebrity or kpop idol, you've probably watched him/her on at least one variety show before. Sure enough, variety programs are a huge part of being a following an idol these days, because they show the true, natural side of a celebrity outside of the idol concept - or at least, that's what we're led to believe. The supposedly raw and real Family Outing has been under lots of scrutiny lately for allegedly rigging its plots. In a recent episode, Kim Jong Kook caught a fish estimated to have a value over $200. However, when netizens took a closer look at this broadcast, they expressed skepticism toward the supposed "lucky catch". Viewers pointed out that the hook's position was tilted, suggesting that the whole thing was actually rigged. "He just caught the fish and it's already weak," one remarked; another mused, "In all my years of fishing, I haven't caught a fish like that... it's difficult to believe that he caught it on his first try." Upon closer examination, the footage itself was also pretty suspicious. Netizens noticed that the scales which should still be on a fresh fish were gone; one viewer even accused, "I think I saw a scuba diver underwater putting the fish on the hook." Ultimately, it seems like netizens are more upset about Family Outing's possibly fake claims to authenticity, not the fact that Kim Jong Kook may've not actually caught the fish. Many have left comments asking for the real footage so that the speculations will be answered once and for all. However, SBS has maintained that everything was real and had not been arranged prior to filming. "This matter doesn't need to be answered," one representative brushed off as SBS refused to reveal the footage. One alleged bystander observed, "Everyone on set, including staff and village residents, was watching, so there couldn't have been a scuba diver. Kim caught the fish and that was it." Regardless of SBS's defense and the supposed bystander's claims, netizens are asking for a simple clarification on this matter and have received no response. Family Outing is reportedly losing viewership and receiving criticism for its silence on this matter. This isn't the first time that a variety show has gotten heat for being dishonest - Star King was attacked for plagiarizing Japanese shows, and MC Mong was accused of plotting 1 Night 2 Days a few weeks ago as well. So what do you think - is Family Outing scripted or are netizens overreacting?
