U;Nee wasn't just a singer, but an actress. Whenever she appeared before her fans or did guest appearances on shows such as SBS's 'X-Man,' she always wore a smile on her face. However, behind her provocative appearance and her wide smile, she was unhappy and was also suffering from depression. As a result of her depression, on January 21, 2007, U;Nee (real name: Lee Hye Ryun) committed suicide by hanging herself in her Incheon home.
Her death came as a surprise to her family and friends, as well as her fans, who were awaiting the release of her third album "Honey." Despite much criticism, U;Nee's management company decided to release her album as planned, and did so on February 1, 2007.
Nobody really knows the real reason why the 26-year-old committed suicide. Some say it was because she was unhappy with the sales of her previous albums, while others are blaming the harsh criticism of netizens on U;Nee's "too sexy" look. Unfortunately, no one will ever know.
U;Nee's family members and her former manager will be holding a memorial for her on January 20, 2008.
