I guess they are waiting for her contract to end. and then they probably will not renew her contract.

well it means she renewed her contract months after leaving f(x) which i thought was something SM would never actually do.

No, they allow renegotiation of contracts if it's still in the best interest of the company. Look at Kibum for example- he was with SUJU, but was originally under the impression that the group was supposed to have a "revolving door" policy, in that members would be switched out. When fans fell in love with the concept as well as it's members, SM decided to keep the group as it was. Kibum did not want to do this, as his real goal was to become an actor, so they allowed him to leave the group but still stay under contract as an actor. Sadly, because of the popularity of SUJU, it seems that he really didn't get that many roles while still under SM, because you never really saw nor heard from him. His contract finally ended, and they allowed him to quietly leave the company without renewing. He's now under a new agency, and is currently working on new projects (I want to say there's something happening in China, but I haven't checked recently). The point I'm trying to make with this example is that they DO allow renegotiations where people don't necessarily leave the company when they leave a group, but some of these actors and actresses don't always get work. Sulli has been very fortunate, I just feel bad that she's taken so much heat over the course of her career thus far from Knetizens- it's like, let her be happy and leave her be already.

It's a little different.. because Kibum never has been a liability for SM, while Sulli definitely was. At one point I thought she was actually trying to force SM to agree to a premature contract termination by creating this loose canon SNS personality. So I always assumed that once her contract was over neither side was interested to renew it.

Well, technically (and no offense to Kibum) he was a bit of a liability when he made it clear that he wanted to leave SUJU. By that point, he was clearly one of the most popular members of the group. Even when it was clear he wouldn't be returning, fans still flocked to his old work and kept asking for them to have him rejoin. That's one of the reasons why I think they never really put him into a lot of work, and why he didn't sign a new contract when his old one finally ended- they didn't want attention being taken away from SUJU, so he only got a few projects here and there. They basically sort of kept him on the back burner, which is a damn shame considering your 20s is the prime time to build the base of your career as an actor when you're in the Korean Idol industry. Not saying he can't still build that up now, but it will be more difficult for him.
