Soldier Yoon murder case update: culprits' sentence lowered from homicide to negligent homicide

Buzz
The case of Soldier Yoon, who died after being beaten ruthlessly by his fellow soldiers, has come to an end as the court recently announced that the culprits Sergeant Lee and others will given lengthy jail time. However, rather than being charged with homicide, Sergeant Lee and others were charged with negligent homicide, as prosecution was unable to prove that the murder was intentional.

While Sergeant Lee was sentenced to 45 years, his accomplices were given 25-30 years. Although homicidal charges can usually issue 20 more years in prison compared to negligent homicidal charges, the department of justice stated that prosecution could not supply evidence that the soldiers were guilty of beating Yoon repeatedly and hiding the beatings from others, therefore unable to prove that the murder was intentional and planned. Even so, the court attempted to punish the soldiers as severely as possible with the charge of negligent homicide.

Yoon's family, however, was not satisfied with the result and made their dissatisfaction very clear. During the court trial, the family was reported to have called the soldiers "murderers", and cried when the soldiers' sentence was announced. In an interview, Yoon's mother protested against the ruling, asking why the charge wasn't homicide and saying that she wanted to leave such an unfair country.

At the 1:53 mark above, Yoon's mother says, "Even so, we were a bit expectant. Even so how could they shamefully trample on us like this? Think of him as your child, how could you not think of it as a homicide?"

Netizens appear to also be dissatisfied with the results as well, with top comments saying, "I want to see if it's murder if I hit the judge and kill him by accident," "There's no logic in the fact that the victims, rather than the culprits, are afraid of the law," and, "So they're saying that now we will be paying for their meals for 40 years through our taxes?"
