An internal employee of Emart (Korea’s largest retail chain) has come under investigation after allegedly taking gift vouchers sent by NCT member Jaemin to fans, prompting an apology from Shinsegae Group.
According to reports on March 16, Shinsegae Group has launched an internal investigation into the Emart Gumi Branch following claims that a store employee exchanged a large number of Shinsegae gift vouchers before the store opened.
The vouchers in question were part of a White Day gift sent by Jaemin to fans. On March 14, the idol shared 30 Shinsegae gift vouchers worth 100,000 KRW (about 75 USD) each through the fan communication platform Bubble.
Fans later visited Emart stores to exchange the digital vouchers for physical gift certificates. However, at the Gumi branch, all vouchers had reportedly already been exchanged before the store officially opened.
Fans raised suspicions online that an employee may have redeemed the vouchers before opening hours. The issue quickly spread across social media, with users questioning whether the act could constitute theft.
Some online claims suggested that the employee involved had already resigned, but reports indicate that this information is not accurate.
Shinsegae Group stated that it is currently conducting an internal investigation and will take appropriate action depending on the results. The company also said it plans to strengthen management guidelines related to the issuance and exchange of gift vouchers to prevent similar incidents in the future.
A Shinsegae Group representative said, “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to customers using Emart. We are currently investigating the circumstances and will take follow up measures based on the findings while reinforcing management standards to prevent recurrence.”
