The popular drama 'Study Group' is returning and is drawing major attention after confirming a second season without changing its lead actor.
On January 27, production company YLAB officially announced the production of 'Study Group Season 2,' confirming that Hwang Min Hyun will reprise his role as protagonist Yoon Ga Min. The news arrives roughly a year after Season 1 was released and has quickly sparked strong reactions from fans of the original webtoon as well as viewers of the drama.
Hwang Min Hyun was unable to participate in promotional activities following Season 1 due to his military service. Having been discharged in December last year, 'Study Group' marks his first project since completing his service, giving the announcement added significance. With the original character and narrative structure fully intact, many see the decision to move forward without a lead cast change as a clear sign of confidence from the production team.

In the series, Yoon Ga Min is a student with little academic talent but possesses overwhelming physical strength he himself is barely aware of, a classic “hidden superhero” character. The role blends action and coming-of-age storytelling within a school drama framework. In Season 1, Yoon Ga Min stood at the center of the narrative as he formed bonds with his study group members at Yuseong High School.
Season 2 will significantly expand the scope of the story. Yoon Ga Min and the study group will go beyond the walls of Yuseong High to confront a massive organization threatening students nationwide. What began as an internal school conflict will evolve into a nationwide confrontation. The new season will also delve deeper into Yoon Ga Min’s inner world, his obsession with studying, and the dilemmas that arise from it - areas that were only partially explored in Season 1.

The production team noted that Hwang Min Hyun already has a complete understanding of the character. Building on the established acting tone and action style from Season 1, Season 2 is expected to feature more dynamic action sequences and a broader narrative scale. Action direction, in particular, is being designed to surpass the intensity of the previous season.
The success of 'Study Group' Season 1 directly paved the way for its sequel. Upon release, the number of paid subscriber contributors and viewing UVs on TVING more than doubled compared to the first week, and the series held the No. 1 spot for five consecutive weeks. Beyond domestic success, it ranked in the weekly Top 5 across 147 countries, including the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and France, demonstrating the global potential of Korean school action dramas.

Critical acclaim followed as well. 'Study Group' ranked No. 7 on TIME magazine’s list of the Top 10 Best K-Dramas of 2025 and won Best Streaming Original Film/Drama at the 2025 Asian Academy Creative Awards, which is an exceptional achievement for a TVING original series.
At a recent CJ ENM in-house awards ceremony, 'Study Group' was also named one of the Visionary Works of the Year, alongside titles such as 'Bon Appetite, Your Majesty,' 'Boys II Planet,' 'Severance,' 'Marry My Husband,' and 'Our Unwritten Seoul.'
Praised for successfully expanding the webtoon’s universe into a live-action format and for its bold experimentation with the “K-school action” genre, 'Study Group' has been widely recognized for its originality. Hwang Min Hyun’s portrayal of Yoon Ga Min has been seen as a definitive interpretation that goes beyond the original source material, while director Lee Jang Hoon has drawn attention as a creator who demonstrated the genre’s global viability.
'Study Group' Season 2 is set to begin filming soon. While its release date and scheduling strategy have yet to be finalized, expectations are high that it will remain a cornerstone of TVING’s original lineup, given the first season’s performance and international response. As anticipation builds, viewers are eager to see how the series will expand its story and whether it can once again replicate its global success.
