The musical Anna Karenina has become embroiled in a casting controversy ahead of its performances, and Kim So Hyang, one of the cast members involved, has indirectly shared her feelings.
On January 27th KST, Kim So Hyang posted a photo on her personal account that appeared to show her drinking an iced beverage at a café terrace at night, along with the caption “I have a lot to say, but I won’t.” The phrase is interpreted as meaning she has much to say but has chosen not to speak out.
This is drawing attention as it is being seen in connection with the recent casting controversy surrounding the musical Anna Karenina.
Recently, the production company Mast International announced the casting schedule for Anna Karenina. The lead role of Anna has been triple-cast with Ock Joo Hyun, Lee Ji Hye, and Kim So Hyang. With the first five weeks of the performance schedule revealed, Ock Joo Hyun’s number of appearances stands out significantly. Out of 38 performances, Ock Joo Hyun is scheduled for 25, while Lee Ji Hye will perform 8 times and Kim So Hyang 7 times. Even combined, Lee Ji Hye and Kim So Hyang’s appearances do not surpass Ok Joo Hyun’s, meaning she will take on more than half of the total shows.
In particular, 5 out of Kim So Hyang’s 7 performances are daytime shows rather than the main evening performances, leading some to view the schedule as being heavily weighted in favor of Ock Joo Hyun.
Despite being triple-cast, the musical Anna Karenina, with ticket prices reaching up to 170,000 KRW, will effectively see Ock Joo Hyun on stage for the majority of performances. Ock Joo Hyun has also been at the center of casting-related controversies in the musical industry in past years.
As Kim So Hyang has indirectly conveyed her feelings, attention is now focused on how the situation will unfold moving forward.
