Are the prices of online concerts becoming too high?

AKP STAFF

In the era of digital advancements, technology has progressed to a point where fans can now relish the concerts of their favorite artists from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need to purchase expensive tickets or attend the venues in person.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic a few years ago brought a halt to various in-person activities, prompting numerous artists to embrace online concerts. Despite the resumption of in-person events, fans still have the option to tune into online concerts at a more affordable ticket price.

However, fans have recently criticized that the online concert ticket prices have increased too much.

One fan wrote in a popular online community, "Idol concerts are broadcast online in real-time, mainly through platforms like Weverse or Beyond Live. Concert ticket prices can be burdensome and for fans who want to attend the concert but couldn't, the online concerts were like a blessing." They added, "However, the prices of these online concerts, which were about 30,000 KRW (~22.50 USD) during the pandemic, have increased significantly. Now, they often exceed 50,000 KRW (~37.51 USD). In some cases, additional fees may be required to purchase streaming rights. Moreover, instead of providing VODs, some concerts have transitioned to a system where, after paying an additional fee for streaming rights, a single re-broadcast is scheduled on a specified date."

Many fans are saying the prices have become too high, especially when considering that the Video on Demand is not included in the ticket price.

Korean netizens agreed and commented, "The ticket prices are becoming ridiculously high," "These companies are really just so rude," "This is why I don't watch concerts online anymore," "Yeah, the prices are crazy these days. So it's better to just go to the concert in person," "I don't even consider online concerts anymore because it's not worth it for that price," and "It's become double the price it was before."

I agree with the criticism that the prices should at least allow viewers to rewatch on demand. Frequently, the time and date of the original broadcast is inconvenient -- but if the re-air time slot is just as inconvenient, why would I pay the high fees?? It's online, it's already been filmed... just let me watch at it my own pace! Bonus, then your servers won't crash all at the same time.

These companies seem to have gone to school of Netflix on how screw people over by nickle and diming them over every little thing. Membership, live only, rerecording, 4k, HD like omg talk about being extra af. Given how much K-pop companies love to do VIP, meet and greet, soundstage, VVIP, etc, etc with real concerts this not surprising,
