Composed of six individuals with their own charms — LILY, HAEWON, SULLYOON, BAE, JIWOO, and KYUJIN — NMIXX is recognized as one of the most talented groups of the fourth generation. Signed under JYP Entertainment, the sextet made their anticipated debut on February 22, 2022, with the single album 'AD MARE,' which features the powerful dance track "O.O" and the addictive B-side "占 (TANK)."

To commemorate NMIXX's comeback, the girls caught up with allkpop for an exclusive interview, where they dished on their latest album, showcase tour, and more.

A MIDSUMMER DREAM

Over a year since their debut, NMIXX returned to the scene with another piece of music. 'A Midsummer NMIXX's Dream' is the group's third single album release that revolves around an undisclosed party in the forest on a summer night, where all diverse and special beings are cherished. "It’s a party celebrating the union between NSWER and NMIXX," LILY tells allkpop.

The record consists of two tracks, the pre-release single "Roller Coaster," serving as the B-side, and the title song "Party O'Clock" which expresses the desire to spend time with someone who captures your interest.

MIXX POP

NMIXX is renowned for its unique sound, referred to as "MIXX Pop," where their songs like "O.O" and "DICE" fall under. Combining energetic big band and jazz elements with a hip-hop beat, "DICE" is the title track of their first comeback release album 'ENTWURF.' 

When asked about their favorite tracks from their discography, HAEWON replied, "It has to be '占 (TANK)' for me! That song gets me excited because the audience loves it too when we perform it on stage," adding that the intro of the song makes her heart race.

"My favorite is 'Just Did It,'" JIWOO shared. "I love SULLYOON’s bridge part so much, it puts me in a good mood every time I dance to this song."

The members admit that it does get nerve-wracking at some point when releasing new music. However, their excitement ultimately overpowers the pressure. "I do get nervous but I’m more excited, so the excitement overcomes the anxiousness," said KYUJIN.

On the other hand, SULLYOON gains positive energy from her close circle. "I get positive vibes from my members or my family by talking about the new album and that’s how I overcome the pressure."

'NICE TO MIXX YOU' TOUR

Earlier this year, NMIXX embarked on their first-ever showcase tour aptly titled 'NICE TO MIXX YOU.' The girls went to various cities in the U.S. and Asia, delivering their astounding live performances.

The tour spanned a total of 13 stops, starting from Seattle and concluding in Manila. During this interview, the members expressed their disbelief at the overwhelming support and cheering they received from their fans, NSWERs. BAE enthusiastically said, "It’s always exciting to meet NSWERs! I hope we get to meet with more NSWERs in other areas too."

The members can't seem to forget the warm welcome they received. JIWOO stated, "I can't forget the loud cheering of NSWERs!" This being their first tour, the members cherished the opportunity to meet their fans, feel their passion, and experience the culture of the areas they visited. "I hope we get another chance like this!"

JIWOO specifically mentioned that their show in Manila was one of the most memorable. "The cheering was loud for all showcases in all areas but NSWERs were especially loud during the last showcase," she said.

When asked about their pre-stage preparations or rituals, HAEWON emphasized the importance of feeling relaxed before performing, saying, "I need to be calm and relaxed going on stage to avoid going off-tune." She also revealed that she personally loves performances rather than just going on stage for a television show. "It’s more fun interacting with fans on stage rather than looking at a camera, and it reminds me of why I’ve wanted to become an idol in the first place," HAEWON continued. "So whenever I’m on stage for a music show, I think to myself, 'Ugh! I want to see face-to-face with NSWERs.'"

For KYUJIN, clearing her throat and stretching are part of her pre-performance routine. "On stage, I try to do as I’ve practiced and I try to keep my facial expression and the camera in mind."

OVERFLOWING TALENTS

NMIXX is known for its multifaceted members. From rapping and singing to dancing, the girls consistently wow the audience with their live performances. Over the past months, the group has been praised by the public for singing live while dancing in their practice room.

When someone talks about how great their skills are, SULLYOON answered, "I’m usually shy but still thank the person who has complimented me, and I think most of the other members react the same way!"

"I’m always very thankful," said BAE, who added that with all the compliments, she feels motivated to grow even more. "I feel motivated to put in more effort to give back to those who have complimented us."

On their growth, BAE believes that all the members have felt that they have grown and become more talented since the very beginning, their trainee days. "We have all been practicing and reaching for our dreams since we were trainees," she continued.

JIWOO agreed with BAE's statement, saying, "Each of our members has her own strength and since our long training days, we have learned so much from each other. When our strengths come together, it creates a big synergy effect."

SUCCESS AND LOVE FOR MUSIC

With their comeback with 'A Midsummer NMIXX's Dream,' NMIXX has shown remarkable growth since debut. The album recorded a whopping 1 million album sales on the Hanteo chart, just in the first week after it was released. 

According to LILY, the key to NMIXX's success lies in the members' individual charms. "I think each member has so many different talents that will draw and attract many different people from all over. There’s something for everyone. So that’s what makes people interested in NMIXX."

The members' passion for music and performing is evident, though there may be difficulties along the way, seeing NSWERs happy and cheering for them on stage is something that makes everything worth it. "I love performing and showing people my talents and I love that I can do that while being an idol," said LILY.

KYUJIN, on the other hand, grew up wanting to become an idol by watching the other K-Pop artists on stage through television. "I’ve loved music and been interested in it since I was a little girl!" she exclaimed.

If there is this one thing the girls want people to remember about NMIXX, SULLYOON hopes they are seen as artists who possess not only talents but also charming personalities.

"An artist who is always 'new,' someone who you don’t get bored of," said HAEWON.
