There are many things that people look forward into the new year. It's a new year of opportunities, a new year of excellent k-pop music, and a new year of dramas, but certain fans are exceptionally happy for one reason - their favorite male celebrity is expected to discharge from the army. Male citizens of South Korea are required to undergo mandatory 18-month military service, and there are no exemptions for celebrities.

While many males opt to serve in their early 20s, many celebrities opt to serve this time as late as possible to not get in the way of their promotions, as the early 20s are often the peak period in their careers.
