10. #10: Gee - Girl's Generation
The colored pants, the cute hairstyles, the adorable dance... we all yearned to be a member of SNSD when we were in middle school. "Gee" marked the pivotal moment that girls had taken back what the men had dominated. SNSD, managed by SM, used "Gee" to break the previous record for #1 on KBS music bank. Receiving a total of 10 wins for the track, the group managed to stay on the top of the charts for upwards of two months. The ability to sweep the charts was just the beginning for Girl's Generation's decade long career as a group. Hits such as "Hoot", "Genie", "Run Devil Run", and more followed the marked success of "Gee".
9. #9: Lollipop - Big Bang & 2NE1
Though these YG groups both have definitively important K-Pop tracks that mark turning points in the music industry, their most memorable has to be "Lollipop". Originally made to promote the LG Cyon phone, the bubblegum pop electro goodness became what can only be now referred to now as the meme of a century. This pivotal video can be forever immortalized in Sandara Park's epic sky-high hair. "Lollipop" shows K-Pop's ability to be ever-evolving and experimental in all regards.
8. #8: Sorry, Sorry - Super Junior
A K-Pop classic, there's not a soul out there who hasn't at least heard this song subconsciously one time or another. Consisting of a whopping 12 members and formed in 2005 by SM Entertainment (see the trend here?), SUJU is a household staple when it comes to K-Pop fans. "Sorry, Sorry" was one of the first tracks to employ a heavy electronic beat in tune with an urban r&b feel that worked for the group. The song earned the group a Triple Crown and succeeded in many other countries such as Taiwan and the Philippines.
7. #7: Abracadabra - Brown Eyed Girls
In 2009, girl groups took a turn for the sexy. Brown Eyed Girls, managed by Mystic Entertainment, ditched their cute outward appearance for a more tempestuous appeal. The video for the track "Abracadabra" was the first to employ more blatantly suggestive content in its visual aesthetics. This marked the end of the aegyo era, as we begin what will be a whirlwind of metamorphosis for girl groups.
6. #6: Mirotic - TVXQ
By 2008, SM Entertainment's H.O.T. and Shinhwa had both disbanded for their individual reasons and they were looking to form a new boy group to fill those shoes. With this came the birth of TVXQ. Though 'Mirotic' is the five-piece ensemble's seventh studio album, it was the first to break Seo Taiji and the Boys' sales. The song's production was the first to lay a 'reverse-beat' track to entice the listener to achieve an addictive sound. This is quite literally the first time K-Pop has gone from entertainment to an addiction!
5. #5: Fly - Epik High
By the turn of the century, hip hop was making its rounds through Asia and South Korea was not immune to its power. Epik High, composed of Tablo, Mithra Jin, and DJ Tukutz debuted with their first album, 'Map of the Human Soul' in 2002. Fast forward to their first major successful album, 'Swan Songs', the main single 'Fly' is utilized on the soundtrack of FIFA 07. Consider this track the seeds of K-Pop's cultural and global power sowing slowly onto the soil of other countries land!
4. #4: Eusha Eusha - Shinhwa
Though Shinhwa was initially accused of being an H.O.T. copycat, the SM turned Good Entertainment group has one of the longest careers of any groups in the Korean music industry. "Eusha Eusha" was the group's cutesy debut song, showing (and possibly starting?) the creation of heavy heart-wrenching aegyo as a part of a group's appeal. Though "Eusha Eusha" was not particularly well-received, the song serves as an important turning point for the way K-Pop was starting to sound.
3. #3: I'm Your Girl - S.E.S.
Move over boys, the girls are in town! Yet another brainchild of SM Entertainment, S.E.S. were the female counterpart to the aforementioned H.O.T. Though the trio only lasted until 2002 when the contracts of two of the group's members concluded, the precedent for females in K-Pop was set with the track "I'm Your Girl". Boasting additional vocals and raps from to-be members of Shinhwa Eric Mun and Andy Lee, the catchy track propelled the three vocalists into the center of attention as one of the main girl groups of the 90s. S.E.S. gives an R&B feel that can only be captured from that era!
2. #2: Candy - H.O.T.
As K-Pop started to develop, we were blessed with the gift of H.O.T. a five member group that debuted in the mid-nineties. H.O.T made SM Entertainment into a household name while "Candy" gained the group numerous sales and bountiful success amidst ongoing domestic financial crises. The group's track gave way to what is now referred to as the 'fandom culture' wherein thousands of teens come together in support of their favorite group. H.O.T. is able to boast the title of first idol group to ever hold a concert in the Seoul Olympic Stadium!
1. #1: I Know - Seo Taiji and the Boys
By the time Seo Taiji's heavy metal band Sinawe broke up in 1991, he set gears to play with the technology of the MIDI, short for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. This musical technology gave birth to a new standard for music, one of which was much more experimental. Seo Taiji formed Seo Taiji and the Boys shortly thereafter, introducing Korea to the concept of a dance pop boy band. "I Know", Seo Taiji and the Boys' hit track, was received poorly initially by critics, however, the group was extremely well-received for their raps and new-age style of music. Known as the 'godfather' of K-Pop, Seo Taiji and the Boys serve as a turning point for the Korean music industry as we once knew it.
