Cosmic Girls' Dayoung proved to be very open about her personal life on MBC's 'Radio Star' on June 15 as she revealed everything about her family's unfortunate circumstances from her parents' divorce to their crushing debt (hopefully with prior consent from said parents...).
It was mentioned that her house in Jeju Island got half immersed in water back in 2007, so she explained that this was because the sewer facility had gotten clogged by leaves. She then said, "My parents divorced in 2006. My father had a lot of debt, but it was all under my mom's name, and my dad said he'd go to Seoul, so they divorced. Back then, the debt was about 1.2 billion or 1.3 billion (~ 1 million or 1.1 million USD).
"Since I was four, my parents had an eel store. After my father left, [my mom] had to do it alone. Every night, my mom cried when she looked at the bank book. The typhoon came and my mother didn't know what to do, and I thought that I should at least scoop out the water alone, so I scooped out the water while swimming. I scooped the water all day until it came to my ankles. I even called 119 (Korean equivalent to 911), and received goods. Not too long ago, my mom got a new boyfriend. They're living well in Jeju Island."
