HIGH SOCIETY - EPISODE 5

Chang Soo: "Talk to the hand."
Ji Yi: "Mrphfgfh!"

After he parts from Yoon Ha, Joon Ki runs into Deputy Sung Tae Sik, who asks if he's dating the "part-timer." Chang Soo hits on Ji Yi while she's on duty, and she rebuffs him. Meanwhile, Yoon Ha's mother attacks and threatens her hubby's mistress. Mama realizes she enjoys her newfound capacity for violence. Later, Chang Soo manages to convince Ji Yi to date him. At the offices of Taejin Group, Ye Won finds "evidence" to support her theory that her late brother was gathering allies, one of them being Yoon Ha. Chang Soo decides that Ji Yi's style is "tacky," and so he takes her shopping. Afterward he wines and dines her at a Japanese restaurant. She tries to break up with him, and he gets upset. She attempts to redefine the relationship on her terms.

Yoon Ha sleeps (and only sleeps) overnight at Joon Ki's house. She wants to avoid going home. Chang Soo's mother tries to fix him up with another blind date, but he heads out when Ji Yi says she wants to see him again. Both our couples (Chang Soo/Ji Yi and Yoon Ha/Joon Ki) go out together and generate more cute moments for the show. After drinking late into the night, Yoon Ha's mom attacks her hubby. At Joon Ki's place, our heroine lies awake thinking while Joon Ki, after a shower, wipes a spot on the mirror for his face and contemplates who he is...

Too cheap to spring for a cab?

Okay this couldn't be more of a soap opera if a ttungbo viking woman stepped onstage started belting out "Tiiiiiide!" Big brother's dead, hubby's a jerk, Yoon Ha is the proverbial black sheep, big sister is scheming, Mom is bat-poo crazy, and Joon Ki is contemplating his identity? You couldn't make it any more makjang if you tried. Oh wait, yeah you could. Let's not jinx it.

Ji Yi and Chang Soo's relationship is a little worrisome. Chang Soo's mother has made it abundantly clear in the few scenes we've spotted her in that Chang Soo must marry according to his station. Last I checked, Ji Yi was not rich. Nor is she likely to be. It's kind of sad because I know what's going to happen. Chang Soo's mom is going to turn into one of those evil drama mamas that we see so often and end up in shrieking fits or at least scheming to take her son away from Ji Yi's influence. It's kind of sad that in a show this laden with tropes, you can still find more that fit into the plot.

She should come with a warning label

Also Yoon Ha's mom concerns me, too. She is completely unhinged. She seems to relish the power that violence apparently brings. She's attacked her husband, Yoon Ha, and her husband's mistress. I can't wait to see what happens when she goes after Ye Won. I can see it, though -- Ye Won doesn't give a spit about her brother's death, honoring his memory and all that. Once she starts the business of moving in, cleaning up his old office, yeah, I can see the sparks fly then.

They spent a generous portion of this episode focused on relationships. Which is a good thing. The shipping is one of the few happy moments of the thing, which seems to have a general aura of tragedy and violence running through it. It's nice that they gave a lot of this installment over to it because it lessens the grimness, at least for a little while. It's much of the reason I watch, and they delivered in spades. There were plenty of "cute together" moments in here, and the secondary romance was even cuter than the main loveline.

Joon Ki prepares himself to do a rendition of 4minute's "Mirror Mirror."

Personally, as bad as it is, there is a glimmer of hope somewhere, that this will get better, and there will be more reasons to watch. That's why I'm sticking with it. How about you guys?
