HIGH SOCIETY - EPISODE 4

"I thought you should know: your fly's unzipped."

We last left our chaebols in a holding pattern. They shake things up here:

At breakfast, Chang Soo asks Joon Ki if he can hire Ji Yi on full-time. He deflects his request. At the store, a colleague, Deputy Sung, tries to threaten and cajole his way into a partnership, but Joon Ki shuts him down. Ji Yi figures out that Chang Soo requested her promotion and acts like a brat towards him to make him hate her. She's falling for him and doesn't want to date someone irresponsible. That evening, Yoon Ha confesses to Joon Ki. He rejects her initially, but turns it around and asks her instead. That night, Ji Yi runs Chang Soo off and then kicks herself for doing so. Yoon Ha's brother goes off on a trip, but his boat tragically strikes a reef and he drowns. Gyung Joon's death threatens to tear the family apart. Yoon Ha is told to take control of Taejin Group. Meanwhile, Joon Ki and Chang Soo pick up Chang Soo's mother at the airport, and Joon Ki learns that Yoon Ha is a chaebol and the heiress of Taejin Group. After her mandatory mourning period, Yoon Ha shows up at work and she apologizes to Joon Ki for going incommunicado. She also tells him to break up with her because she lied about her social status. As she dissolves into incoherent tears, Joon Ki holds her in a reassuring hug and they kiss...

Three things you never want to hear your pilot say while flying: "Where are we?" "Why is it doing that?" "Oh no!"

I don't want to sound cold, but that's not who I expected to bite it and I certainly didn't expect it this early. I thought for sure one of the elders like one of the parents (either Joon Ki's or Yoon Ha's) would bite it. I figured Joon Ki would be the natural choice since his father is in ill health to begin with, so Gyung Joon's death came as a bit of a shock to me. One moment, he's fine, the next you're seeing a news report of his death. Of course, if they wanted more suds, they could write it in that he survived and just lost his memory, but they've already addressed that in the script, so it's unlikely.

Ji Yi is funny. Her "I like you but I don't" moments are really cute, and I don't want them to stop. I just hope it doesn't get old, which it can if they keep it up. I think her and Chang Soo are a really cute couple, and it's refreshing to have a second lead couple that isn't played entirely for laughs. Each of them has a stronger personality than what you see normally in second leads, and these strong wills cause them to clash. It's funny, it's cute, but it's not over the top. I think if they wanted to make it even better, they'd get them together, but have Ji Yi agonize over her decision constantly. Since Chang Soo doesn't believe in dating leading to marriage, it would be funny to have him awkwardly walking into churches and inquiring about rings, all the while wondering what's making him do this.

They totally should have given her fangs here.

There's something really wrong with Yoon Ha's mom. I mean really wrong. She seems deeply, deeply disturbed. I know you can be consumed by grief. I know she blames her youngest daughter for everything. And people have blamed other people for the death of a loved one. That's unfortunate, but not uncommon. But this woman flew off the handle, attacked her daughter and screamed, "You need to die!!" Not. Normal. As ridiculous as some dramas have gotten, even to the point of a potential mother-in-law plotting someone's death, I've never quite seen that. I would never feel comfortable around a family member who tried to do that to me.

Now I can't quite see where it's going. It's funny. We've got the two main characters together, and Yoon Ha has been appointed VP of Taejin, and now the only thing left is for Ji Yi to grab her guy. Unless they're planning to pack it with tropes. Man, I hope not. I don't want to tune in to only to find that Ji Yi has amnesia, Joon Ki is struck blind, Yoon Ha finds out she was really adopted, and Chang Soo turns out to secretly be a murderer which is why he's so stuck on Ji Yibecause she was a witness. And let's stick a flower boy band in there just because. Never mind. I don't want to know. :)

"Unnie! Unnie! I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance!"

I'm enjoying this, now that it finally knows what it wants to be. And since I don't have a K-drama crystal ball, let's find out what happens together, shall we?
