K-Drama Feature: Sideline Romances

SIDELINE ROMANCES

Obviously the draw of many K-dramas is the romance, in particular, the romantic triangle--however, the main couple is not alwaysquite the center of attention. There are cute side characters to keep things interesting, meaning side romances, as well!

We've already talked about the tragic second leads, but what about the secondary/side romances that happen between the other characters in the drama? It's always a good thing to see the hero get the girl, but it's just as satisfying to see, say, the hero or heroine's best friend happy and in love, as well. To that end, here are a few characters who found love despite not being the main characters.

Bo Na and Chan Young

Heirs

Amid all the chaebol meanness, some of these spoiled kids rise above it. Bo Na and Chan Young were such a couple. They went to school together and grew to be in love. While the main couple in 'Heirs' was kind of annoying at times (he gets close, she runs away, repeat), Bo Na and Chan Young were sweetness personified.

Ga Eul and Yi Jung

Boys over Flowers

Dashing, spoiled chaebol Yi Jung foundGa Eul when she was sad about a cheating boyfriend and then comforted her, making her feel special. He was looking for perfection; she believed there was a perfect someone out there for everyone. Somehow, they found they were perfect for each other, even getting together after years on different continents.

Pil Suk and Jason (a.k.a. "The Milky Couple")

Dream High

It might be fair to say that their romance was sweeter than the main one. When Pil Suk first appeared, she was dressed in a sushi costume to hide her chubbiness. Jason looked past that and fell for her. At first, I was shaking my head as she was working hard to lose weight for the school and for him. But a picture on Jason's phone of Pil Suk pre-weight loss restored my faith in their love. Their love wasn't easy, especially when she broke up with him for his lack of ambition, but it worked out great in the end.

Sang Hyuk and Young Ae

Emergency Couple

While the main couple fought like cats and dogs trying to remain apart, Sang Hyuk and Young Ae started the series very much in love. Their lovey-dovey scenes were so sickeningly sweet you might end up checking your blood sugar after watching them. Even as the primary couple drew closer, Sang Hyuk and Young Ae's marriage took a turn for the worse when she thought she was pregnant; they'd never discussed kids. He was ecstatic, she was decidedly not. They ended up together again, but I still missed the cute love scenes from the start of the show.

Teddy Seo and Ellie

Angel Eyes

A one-sided romance in whichTeddy was infatuated with the main character's sister from the start. He couldn't let her know; he could only stare at her with puppy dog eyes. So imagine his surprise when he found out she was interested in his sunbae! It eventually worked itself out, and she ended up with Teddy in the end. Admit it: you were pulling for them, too.

Ah Young and Secretary Kim

Secret Garden

As Secretary KimfollowedAh Young around like a lost puppy, we felt a little sad for himevery time he was shot down. But this just made the pairing even more sweetly satisfying in the end. In a show packed with just as many bizarre moments as awesome ones, their scenes together were delightful.

Sung Hyun and In Young

I Need Romance

In Young was unsure and separated from her boyfriend. Sung Hyun was sweet and willing to take his time. She knew he loved her more than she loved him, which made it even more bittersweet and drew us in even deeper. An old-fashioned romance that was doomed from the start, but still one that tugs at the heartstrings.

Park Jin Sung and Moon Hee Sun

Wind Blows in Winter

Jin Sung was always by the male lead's side, Eun Ji was the sister of the lead's deceased fiancee. This couple served to really lighten up the rather dark mood of this drama. While they pulled the male lead's butt out of some hairy situations, they ended up in love, adorably engaged in mortal liplock. Their scenes together were rare moments of sweetness, a direct counterpoint to the cynicism of the main storyline.
