According to reports, during a fan meeting event held on March 18, Irene was asked what books she has been reading lately. To this, she answered that she read 'Kim Ji Young, Born 1982', a feminist novel. Upon finding this out, some (former) male fans took to an online community site that is heavily used by males, to express their anger and even posted pictures of them burning her photos.
Seeing this, netizens and fans came to her defense and criticized the people who burned her merchandise and/or decided to leave the fan club for such a reason. The tweet below reads, "I'm so baffled that I can only laugh lololol."

Anyways Irene doesn't need those male fans bc they are fake and only like her for her looks. She has a a lot of female fans that will support and care for her— Taylor (@jisoogrande) March 18, 2018
irene gets objectified and sexualized on numerous korean sites by those male "fans" good riddance they are leaving because she read a book on feminism, men really are trash.— t??ba (@drunktaeyeon) March 18, 2018
Since this issue has gone viral, Korean netizens also stepped in to defend the Red Velvet member and even expressed that the idol doesn't need such fans. Some comments can be read as the following, "Basically their logic is: you're pretty, why do you need to read something like that. Lol, that book is a bestseller for all ages, they're so ignorant smh", "I wish people like these take this chance to just leave the fandom", and more.
What do you think of the situation?
