On November 19, the American singer posted a snapshot of herself posing with BTS, as she sat playfully on RM's lap at the AMAs inside Microsoft Theater.
The caption read, "Giving my boys a pep talk before their first American TV performance. You guys are going to kill it!" with much enthusiasm.
In the United States, this is innocentenough. However, there were netizens who seemed to have mixed views about the pop singer sitting on top of RM's lap. As this isn't the norm in Korea, some netizens felt this to be disrespectful. There were also many others who defended Rachel and were ok with it. Others have stated that she was sitting on an armrest and not on RM's lap.
Netizens commented, "RM looks rather embarrassed", "Not sure if it's the cultural difference but that's taking things a bit too far," "From the angle taken, it looks like she can be leaning against the seat's armrest but I could be wrong. However, if she did actually sit on top of RM's lap she has no manners whatsoever," "the boys do look uncomfortable," "??? I still don't get what all the fuss is about", "Now that's hot," "looks photoshopped, no?"
Due to the backlash, Rachel Platten has disabled the comments on her Instagram post.
