GOT7 - 'JUST RIGHT'

Track List:
1. Just right
2. Before The Full Moon Rises
3. My Entire Body Reacts
4. Nice
5. Mine
6. Back To Me

The time is 'Just Right' for a GOT7 comeback. Mark, JB, Jackson, Jr., Youngjae, BamBam, and Yugyeom are back once again, ready to bring it on their new EP.

With a crazy bouncing synth line, "Just Right" is a playful song. It's got about the same amount of raps and croons. Repetitive hooks help this song pop. It's silly and cool and fun all at the same time. The lyrics talk about how the girl doesn't need to change anything, how he finds her perfect. One thing I can say for him: JYP is a hell of a songwriter.

"Before The Full Moon Rises" continues in much the same tempo, but the tone is not as fun. With synth washes and smooth croons, the boys compare being girl-crazy to being a wolf, warning the girl to "hurry home before I change, before the wolf in me awakens."  A soft song that they tackle skillfully.

The next track is "My Entire Body Reacts," an emotionally sung ballad. They seem very earnest and sincere, except for the rapper, who is practically smiling through his voice. The boys are saying that they can't control themselves, that their whole body reacts. To my ears, it sounds a bit bland, though it does have a lot more rapping in it than the previous track.

The tone for the second half of the EP is set with "Nice," a song buoyed by a minimalist bleeping synth and rhythmic and fierce vocals. There are some playful raps in here, as well. It's got some absolutely sweet hooks, if a bit simplistic: "What's up? What's up? Yeah What's up? It's G-G-G-G-GOT7." While the song is saying "nice," they really aren't talking about her personality.

"Mine" is the requisite club banger. A danceable beat, a hooky chorus, and powerful vocals usually are enough to pull me in. In this case, they did their job. And as to what it's about, I'll let the boys explain themselves:

"Eyes are wanting her from here and there
All over the place, they're coming closer
I'm not myself right now, I need to be careful
Cuz it's time to lose control time time time to lose control"

The final track, "Back To Me," is an R&B tune, sung with raps liberally sprinkled throughout. It's a fun tune, done at the right tempo. GOT7 is basically begging the girl to come back to them.

Interesting album. It started out a bit weak, though, tending toward the soft side and then picking up at the end. There's one kinda meh song, but that doesn't make the rest of the album bad at all. There's a not-so-serious vibe running through the album that makes things a little brighter while you're listening to it. There's not a lot of posturing or attitude where they try to ooze badassery. Neither too hard nor too soft, this EP is Just Right.

MV REVIEW

Mark's sitting on the hand of a clock, Youngjae is dancing in front of a cereal box, BamBam is laying on cereal floating in a bowl of milk.  They all dance on the desk of a little girl. Is this some crazy scene from "Honey, I Shrunk the Band?" Nope. That's just some of the trippy things you will see in this hilarious new MV.

Taking a page from Orange Caramel's "Catallena," the video mavens have transformed GOT7 all into mini-idols and set the scene appropriately for their diminutive adventures. Each shot shows them interacting with objects that are larger than them, everyday items we take for granted.

The dancing is even funnier, with them making chipmunk cheeks as they bend and prance. To see them lipsynching the chorus during the ooooh is priceless. Precise and yet playful, watching them dance was just as fun as the rest of the video.

These are the kinds of things I like to see. It's generally more original than fan service, and it makes you laugh as well. While not entirely an original idea (or even relevant to the point of the song), the makers of the MV took it, ran with it, and made it their own. While I don't necessarily want to see endless variations on this theme, this time it was better than okay. It was a delight.
