[Spoilers!] Heirs Ep. 5: Five Moments when Reality Sucked

Lee Min Ho

One of the great things with stories about teenagers is that everything is a huge deal. Characters are just learning to deal with grown-up issues so everything is new, awkward and difficult. All of this makes for some great drama.

But then you've got kids like the ones in 'Heirs', who are not only learning to navigate teenage life, but are being forced into very adult situations- marriages, mergers- we see a couple of teens at Jeguk High discussing what to do about their stock trading, for goodness' sake! While most of our cast is used to this life, Eun Sang (Park Shin Hye) is a major fish out of water in this situation, having grown up outside of the weird, weird world of wealthy businessmen and women. The reality of this world is pretty tough on everyone- let's look at some of the moments when it was particularly nasty.

5. Ki Ae tells Tan that Won hates him... as if he didn't know already

I feel bad for Ki Ae (Kim Sung Ryung)- she never seems to quite know what's going on around her. That's not to say she's an innocent bystander or that she couldn't just find things out for herself, but she really seems to have no idea what she's doing in Mr. Kim's (Jung Dong Hwan) world. While basically no one seems to understand just how much Tan (Lee Min Ho) misses his brother and wants to be close to him, it's Ki Ae- his own mother- who seems the most clueless, going so far as to outright say to Tan's face that Won (Choi Jin Hyuk) hates him, as if Tan wasn't fully aware of this after their meeting in the US and then again in Korea when Tan moved back home.

4. Ji Sook accuses Tan of throwing Won out of the house

This one hurts because it's both untrue and true- Won warned Tan that by returning to Korea, he gave up any chance of the two of them having a good relationship. Tan, being his own weird kind of idealist, doesn't fully understand what Won means by this, and is heartbroken when Won's mother (Park Joon Geum) that Won is intentionally avoiding the house because of him.

Poor Tan has spent pretty much his whole teenage life alone- his mom didn't even come with him when he moved to California at fifteen- and all he wants in life is Won's approval- approval that he is very, very unlikely to get.

3. Jae Ho and Esther have a history that can't end well for anyone

We've all seen this coming for a while now. Chan Young's dad (Choi Won Young) and Rachel's mom (Yoon Son Ha) have a romantic history together, and it's a set up for disaster. Rachel's mom is getting ready to marry Young Do's dad (Choi Jin Ho) for money, but (as their secret make-out session in the restaurant hallway proves), she and Chan Young's dad aren't over each other. Since Jae Ho's part of the Jeguk crowd (which Esther's daughter (Kim Ji Won) is supposed to marry into) and Esther's trying to marry into the Zeus Hotel group, this has no chance of going well for anyone involved.

2. Eun Sang has no chance of going to college

When Eun Sang's mother (Kim Mi Kyung) finds Eun Sang's paperwork that says she has no college plans, it's a sad moment, mostly because there's nothing to be done about it. Hee Nam herself admits that she can't afford to send Eun Sang to college, even though Eun Sang is an excellent student. This is why she's so insistent that Eun Sang go to Jeguk when she gets the chance- a high school diploma may not be much, but at least a Jeguk diploma is going to get her further in life than a diploma at her old school, even if the change is going to be hard and Eun Sang's going to have a hell of a time fitting in.

1. Young Do may be awful, but it's not exactly a surprise that he turned out that way.

Okay, so we all knew that Young Do (Kim Woo Bin) couldn't have had it easy growing up in his dad's world, but we're starting to get an idea of exactly what being in that world entails. When Rachel's mother gives Young Do a collar for his dog, he coolly explains that he bought that dog when he was in junior high, using the money given to him by his father's string of mistresses. Eww

The lack of stability at home isn't an excuse to be a jerk, but it does make his coldness towards his family (and... well... everyone) and his "mergers and acquisitions" view of marriage at least a little more understandable.

I'm not joking when I say that I almost wrote "Five Times Tan Stared At Things Sadly", but I couldn't narrow it down to five times. I know that emotional staring is a K-Drama mainstay, but maybe Tan could dial it back just a little bit?

I'm hoping that we get to see more of Hyo Shin (Kang Ha Neul!!!) now that we're finally at Jeguk High (only took us five episodes to get to the main setting of the drama, haha). Now that all our main kids are in one place, the drama should really heat up. What are you looking forward to most?
