A few days ago, a post was made on allkpop about Girl2School, an apparently new girl group on the scene. While there were both positive reactions and those willing to give them time to develop, many reactions were immediately negative. Given new information though, perhaps ample time should be given to the group, as while they did release a music video and will be releasing a digital single album, the girls themselves are still technically trainees because they have yet to graduate from the school and are still in the process of being taught to sing and dance. Technically speaking, the upcoming single album is actually a project album. The official Daum Cafe has over 30 students who qualified out of the many applicants, but only 14 out of those 30 were officially announced on November 26th to participate in the "Let's Play Dance" digital single project album and music video. If you didn't notice earlier, Jung Chan Woo of the duo, "CulTwo", was the school teacher who appeared at the beginning of their music video. He recently revealed that he helped sponsor Girl2School to allow for free training and education for aspiring celebrities through an online audition program (or school) format. Partially due to the overwhelming response after allkpop posted about them, their site actually crashed, and word of the reaction from international fans reached their representatives. As a result, they felt compelled to update the information on their official site so that their purpose and status was clearer. allkpop was contacted by a representative of Girl2School who notified us of the change, and you can now see their clarified statement (in English) on their official site. Wow reading about Girl2School and their online-audition journey really gave me a nostalgic K-pop vibe! The idea of a free online star training program where hopefuls could audition and get a shot at debuting seems so democratic and exciting. I love that 14 members were selected, and their debut digital single Let's Play Dance had so much potential.
Its also interesting that the concept was backed by Jung Chan Woo having a known figure support such a project must have meant a lot for the trainees. Even if Girl2School didnt become a long-standing giant in the K-pop world, I think their story is a cool reminder of how many aspiring stars take that jump through unconventional opportunities.
Hope more programs like this (with real chances for talented but undiscovered performers) emerge again the world of K-pop grew strong because of talents coming from all backgrounds.
