You are still missing my pointđ¤Śđťââď¸ I did not mention at all about foreign idols receiving backlash from their home country & Korea. For the 100th time I was literally only talking about how it wasnât insensitive what she did and that sheâs free to express her culture whenever she wants.
Secondly, Jackson receives sooooo much hate for being Chinese. He literally takes the most heat the last couple of years from both china & Korea because heâs from Hong Kong. literally nothing he does is ever good enough for both. But that has never stopped him. I donât think Twice are good examples of culture sharing & itâs mainly because of how they treat Tzuyu. Twice profit heavy from Japan and have not just 1 but 3 members that are Japanese. There is a clear difference between how Twice treats Japan and Japanese culture and how they treat Taiwan. Theyâve never even been there for a concert.
Yes you have idols like Yuqi as well who are Chinese and actively promote and work in china as Jackson is, all of the members from G idle love her and ask her to teach them mandarin an she signs Chinese and even Cantonese songs on live streams there is a very mutual respect. Yuqi has even played the Chinese zither in Happy Together and Idol Room. But the problem as I pointed out is not the members, no one implied that members of any group cannot respect or get along with Chinese or Japanese members, GOT7 in that remark is no different, literally the same as any other group with foreign members, including EVERGLOW. The problem is the public, specifically the extremist who utilize idols to push their own vendetta's. Thankfully Jackson or Yuqi haven't, but they certainly could be the next target for their twisted motives. So it is not about if the members get along or any respect of culture within the group at all, in fact that means nothing to the extremist, it is about what they do publically that they can utilize for their own vendetta, they have their go to's, one time it's a drama, the next time it's an idol. These things never happen with members from Thailand or Australia or America etc. This particularity is strictly delegated to the political narratives/notions infused in the complexity of the relationships with these nations. Jackson being great friends and loved by his members means nothing, it's what the public could do of him. How they use idols of his nationality to convey their own agenda. Yiren is loved by her members and her culture is more than respected, she has simply been chosen by extremist to be the new poster girl of anti Korea/ anti China ideologies. Sana is loved and respected by all Twice members, she was just chosen to be the poster girl of a Japanese boycott and anti japan sentiment.
Youâre comments are missing the point. The person who I was replying to was saying that if sheâs the only one doing something it comes off as insensitive to the rest of the group. My comment was directed towards that and I was making the point that most often than not foreign idols are forced into assimilation therefore if she has to be alone on spreading her culture so be it sheâs free to keep what parts of her culture she wants and there shouldnât be this kind of âtime & placeâ restriction on when itâs acceptable.
I used got7 & Blackpink because they are by far the best examples of members accepting each otherâs cultural differences & making things normal. For example, the fact that both groups use English as a whole in their regular day to day talks or that they treat each other as equals despite age differences unlike how it is in Korea. Doing group variety shows in each otherâs countries or shooting MVâs. For example GOT7 did âReal Thaiâ & they shot the MV for âYou Areâ in Jacksonâs hometown. The fact that Jackson buys Bambams favorite Chinese snacks before he leaves china to go back to Korea or that even before debut multiple members went to china with Jackson and LA with Mark just to visit. Like I said itâs different when groups are truly engaging in cultural acceptance and language exchange verses when itâs tolerated
I agree and I'm not saying I support this but Thailand and South Korea don't have all the political, historical, cultural ties and ramifications that South Korea have with Japan or China, which are a VERY strained relationships. Constantly boycotting each other, constantly fighting, every election year a new stance on these nations etc. It's not the same than comparing them to Japanese or Chinese idols, sadly they become poster images for whatever the social cultural/ political atmosphere within their countries towards each other is. Like with Sana, when she posted on Instagram a farewell to the last Japanese era, she was then used as the political pouncing bag for all the hate and repressed anger. What I find disappointing in all of these situations is that clearly Kpop should serve as an example that reunification is possible and in the very little that they can get along. Twice are an example of that.
You forget that GOT7 has 1 of the most famous Chinese kpop idols Jackson and it doesnât change the fact that Jackson and the members are very respectful of his culture. There have been plenty of times when Jackson & mark will talk in Chinese to each other or even Bam. The members would cover Chinese songs for concerts in china. Itâs not to say that Jackson doesnât receive criticism but if no one pushes for these things the problems will continue
OOF at that gif. I think it's fine if Yiren wants to express her individuality as a Chinese but if she's the only one doing it while everyone else is literally by her feet it comes off somewhat insensitive to the very country that has welcomed you to promote in. Thats like the equivalent of an icon walking into a room and everyone getting up to applaud besides you just because you don't care about them.

Anyway, don't even get me started on the C-netizens comment. I bet you if a crazy popular Chinese artist made bowing like that popular they would probably then say Koreans copied Chinese traditional bows.
I donât agree. Being in a group is about accepting each other and the backgrounds other members come from. In almost all kpop groups with foreign members the identities of the foreign idols almost always have some form of eraser. Foreign members are always the ones forced into assimilation. There are only 2 groups that donât do this which are Blackpink & GOT7. both groups do not cater to just the Korean members and in these groups you see true culture and language exchange among members. I hope Yiren holds strong and continues to keep the parts of her culture that are important to her.
When it comes to being targeted by these hate campaigns, there is no difference between a group that is truly engaging in their cultures and simply tolerating it, both kinds have still been targeted by this hate. Twice literally spends half of their time in Japan, they have so many Japanese reality shows and are constantly showing their appreciation of their foreign members. Sacrifice all of their Christmas and new years eve to tape shows in famous holiday Japanese televised festivities. Have made music videos, albums, their first and biggest concert tour in Japan. When in Korea, they talk constantly about Japan how much they love it and the food, make live streams in Japanese, talk about their favorite Japanese commercials and the J line happily share their childhood Japanese memories with the Korean ones. At all times showing nothing but interest and appreciation. Twice has gone from knowing virtually zero Japanese to now fully fluent. They are just as engaged in Tzuyu's culture as well. At all times showing to the Korean audience a true bond and appreciation of their foreign members. Twice are literally engaging constantly in their foreign members culture, not tolerating it, engaging in it. Then what made Twice the target for the Japanese boycott? Not them, not their supposed lack of engagement in their foreign members culture, nope... the public. Clearly showing that the problem is not instigated by group dynamics but by the public. GOT7 have not been saved from these things because they engage in their cultures, they have been because they have luckily not been targeted. Can you think of any other possible reason this could happen to Twice? And Black Pink doesn't have any Japanese or Chinese members. Also you seem to think I'm in favor of this when I stated I was clearly not, I'm in favor of this stopping as soon as possible. I'm just trying to say that clearly it is not always a matter of "Oh we need groups to be more engaged in the cultures of their foreign members. That way we can open up acceptance." While I agree with stopping assimilation, groups that engage in their different cultures are still being targeted, proving that is not the entire solution. The problem is the nations own hateful vendetta that utilizes public famous figures as their vehicles to drive in any hate.
