Netizens have recently been buzzing about the price of a special microphone singer IU had gifted to a fan who has dreams of becoming a singer.

Broadcasted on April 29, Dingo Channel presented footage of the idol star meeting with a fan named Yoo Rim who is passionate about singing.

IU then gifted the girl a headphone and an expensive looking studio microphone from Audio-Technica.

Seeing this, netizens scrambled to look up the price online.  It seems even with a discount coupon, the microphone costs around 3 million KRW (approximately $2,700).

Netizens commented, "Even IU who went through hardships, took the time to gift Ms. Yoo Rim with something she truly needed," "A lot of thought and effort has been put into this."

After the broadcast, IU sent a handwritten letter as well as a gift card to Yoo Rim and has been keeping in touch with her.

omg IU..

I think if IU gifted a cheaper and affordable mike, which i feel would be sufficiant for the fan, netizens would call her a cheapstake for gifting something so low in value compared to how much she is making. However when stars buy things for themselves, netizens like it when they are thrifty, example like wearing a $50 or $200 dress to a award ceremony and looking stunning as compared to a US$2000 branded designer dress. they will say wow the star is humble and looks good even when not spending and wasting money on such expensive things.

you can literally get this same mic, audio technica at4050 for $700 on amazon...what the heck is up with korean pricing?!

themightymoron Wednesday, May 3, 2017

i hope it's not ribbon mic. those things are expensive AND fragile

Professional microphones are indeed very fucking expensive. Some could even go for 100,000 dollars! That fan must've truly believe in her vocal talent!

So in the end, instead of congratulating the fan and admiring IU for the gesture, they obsessed in checking out the microphone's price?

loveyang Wednesday, May 3, 2017

wow that's a lot of money just for a microphone 2,700 dollers

ohbunnies Wednesday, May 3, 2017

there is even an IU scolarship..

$2700? Doesn't seem right unless Korean prices are much higher (over 2x) than the US counterpart. Because I'm fairly certain that picture with the actual mic is of the AT4050ST model and Audio Technica's RRP on their US site is "only" $1299.

When products are from USA to a different country, the products will always be price higher. In the Philippines, we call it luxury tax.

I saw the uncropped version of the picture and the model number is apparently AT4060. On the US site it says $1815. Even with import and other fees it does seem a little high. Especially considering $2700 is supposed to be the discounted price :O (But then again, I'm no expert in how the economics works :s)

chocolates from uk costs one pound while in here it costs around 3-4 pounds. Imports have different prices than "native" products.

I don't know about Korea but china often has 100% duty fee. Which means everything has to be sold double the price even without including transportation fee and other costs.

huggi azzora8 Wednesday, May 3, 2017

That's harsh considering it was probably made in China...

huggi xoxojy Wednesday, May 3, 2017

Looked up the AT4060 and it's apparently a discontinued product (replaced by the AT4060a). But neither of those two have that little switch under the Audio Technica logo so I'm not sure it is those...
