Former S.E.S. member Eugene revealed on MBC’s “Come to Play” today, which had a special feature about former idol group members, that “While I was part of S.E.S., especially when we had just debuted, our management agency watched our behavior very seriously. Our manager practically stood in front of us at all times so we could maintain our image. Because we were so shielded, we didn’t know we were so popular.” The singer-turned-actress added, “But when I see the guys around me go crazy over Girls' Generation or the Wonder Girls these days and I ask why, they say, ‘During your time, the guys were like this too’, and I think, ‘Oh, I guess we were that popular too’.” Former g.o.d. member Son Ho-Young also added his tidbit, “We were performing at the Blue House (the residence of the president) and Park Joon-Hyung shook hands with President Roh Moo-Hyun, then the two hugged like they were friends. The rest of the members saw from the back, and we were really shocked, but the president was smiling.” He also said he cried a lot after their first broadcast, but no one really cares about that. Former H.O.T. member Moon Hee-Jun also added his tidbit about his hairstyle, and former Fin.K.L. member Ok Ju-Hyun said how she didn’t think black hair suited her so she dyed her hair brown and the hair dye seeped down her face during a music video shoot. Um, thank you for that weird mental image. As for S.E.S. being as popular as Girls' Generation or Wonder Girls during their 'time' (i.e. late 1990s), I'm not too sure about that. The K-pop scene was more “conservative” back then, so there really wasn't any underage girls parading around in shorts that could pass for underwear. Instead, they wore really cute outfits and had crazy hairstyles. And since Girls' Generation and the Wonder Girls cater more to the old men teetering on pedophilia, and everyone knows there’s a bigger market there, S.E.S. definitely did not have the popularity of girl bands these days.
