Yuna Kim and Son Yeon Jae, two famous Korean athletes, are having drastically different experiences in the midst of the Korean Presidential scandal that is consuming the nation.

Choi Soon Sil and President Park Geun Hye's corruption scandal is having a huge impact, not only in the political realm but also in the entertainment and sports industries. The reason why Choi Soon Sil was able to reach those two fields is because of Jang Shi Ho and MV director Cha Eun Taek

Jang Shi Ho is Choi Soon Sil's niece who has abused her aunt's power in the world of sports. Along with Jang, Cha Eun Taek is also known as someone who has had a big influence in the industry. Among many things Cha is being accused of, one that stands out is the 'Neul Poom Exercise' that Cha created with the government's money.

With the recent revelations of the corrupt influence over the Korean sports world, the public is taking note of the fact that Yuna Kim refused to participate in the 'Neul Poom Exercise' demonstration event; Son Yeon Jae, one the other hand, attended the event and stood next to President Park.

KBS reported on November 19, "Testimonies of Yuna Kim receiving damages and disadvantages from [Choi Soon Sil]'s influence have come out...Yuna Kim rejected the invitation to demonstrate 'Neul Poom Exercise.' And because of this, she became a target of the government disapproval."

Yuna Kim's staff had cited her busy schedule for a reason to turn down the invitation. The staff explained, "We were verbally invited to the event [back in 2014], but we had to work for Pyeongchang Olympics and Youth Olympics promotions, so we turned it down."

The problem started here. By not promoting 'Neul Poom Exercise', Yuna Kim was excluded from the '2015 Sports Heroes' list that the Korean Sports Committee selected, even though she received 82.3% of the popular votes from the 12 candidates. When the vote results came in, the committee disqualified Yuna Kim, saying that they now had a new age limit rule. Because this process did not make a lot of sense, there were some debates and skepticism even back then.

On the other hand, Son Yeon Jae attended the demonstration event for the controversial 'Neul Poom Exercise' back in November of 2014. A Son Yeon Jae staff member stated, "We got invited to the event through the Korea Gymnastics Committee...We did not have a reason to refuse."

Because the corruption scandal's national scale, there are many speculations and rumors. Some speculate that Son Yeon Jae received unfair benefits because she attended the exercise demonstration whereas Yuna Kim refused.

For one, Son Yeon Jae received The Korean Sports Committee's 'Best' and 'Grand' awards three years in a row. The problem is that traditionally, only Olympic gold medalists have won these 'Grand' awards. In fact, in the last 10 years, the recipient has always been a gold-medalist. Son Yeon Jae did have accomplishments -- she won many prizes and ranked in other Asian and Universiade competitions. However, Son Yeon Jae ranked 5th place in the 2012 London Olympics and 4th place in the 2016 Rio Olympics. On the other hand, Yuna Kim has won both gold and silver medals in the Olympics since 2010.

Because of these suspicious circumstances, Son Yeon Jae's website and her agency's website were temporary down due to many netizens writing to express their concerns and demanding them to explain themselves.

Another example that shows how S Korea is still like a third world country. President - and any official/famous person who get caught up in scandals has to deeply apologize and bow for forgiveness. The country is controlled by family run businesses - eg, samsung,LG, hyundai...Korean dramas industry was created by the government to drive international interest, and the television networks are government controlled. The cast system based on famiy ties and wealth and the treatment of women. And the only upward mobility is through a slave-like education system demanding a daily focus of 10-14 hrs beginning in elementary school, or if you are well connected. S Korea ranks number 1 amongst OECD nations for suicide, alcoholism, smoking, lack of womens rights, poverty amongst the elderly... oh, and the protesters come out in droves for the smallest of issues...It's a really odd country.

what I find surprising is that people are upset about the corruption surrounding this president even though, as far as I know, this kind of corruption has been more or less common ever since South Korea existed. Especially since the presidency of the current president's father.

You've answered your question. Koreans sat quietly and took it even though all personal freedom was non existent, the poor were slaves and the intellectuals disappeared never to be seen again. They took it because the country itself was turning ito an economic boomtown even though only a small percentage were thriving. People who lived through those years still don't speak out and become angry or afraid when others do. The President is more than aware of this. She had a front row seat. We still have a judicial system that was created in those years as well as an education system. Guaranteed to make you intelligent with no social or coping life skills whatsoever. It has to stop.

but its not Son Yeon Jae fault either. it would be stupid to blame things on her

L_catzzz Monday, November 21, 2016

Lel~ While I read the title I was expecting something else. After reading it, mehh~ It's neither Yuna or Yeon Jae fault, just some stupid person (choi soon sil) fault.

bangeryun94 L_catzzz Tuesday, November 22, 2016

Her niece's fault, Jang Shi Ho, chingu.

L_catzzz bangeryun94 Tuesday, November 22, 2016

Owh yeah. Jang Shi Ho faults too~

taj4329 Monday, November 21, 2016

I get why people are upset but its not Yeon Jae's fault, she didn't know about the overall corruption she and her team just did what was in hter interest. This whole thing is in danger of becoming a witch hunt. Just focus on the President and Choi and other people DIRECTLY responsible not peripheral people.

The government is really giving it all they've got just to divert people's attention. Whatever this girls got for joining or not joining that event is something they don't even have a hold of. Their agencies are the ones who are doing that.

jennkyube Monday, November 21, 2016

I found it a pure coincidence whether they accepted the invitations or not. It shouldn't be the base on how corrupt they are. I bet you they all would've rather stood up and protested Prez Park to come down too, but it's not easy to gather the courage. I salute people like Lee Joon and Jung Woo Sung who have the bravery to stand up and voice their opinion, but not being able to do that is also understandable. It takes a lot to be brave like that.

I feel bad for the gymnast...whether she received unfair advantages or not, it most probably wasn't her personal doing.  Just like idols, athletes have handlers that do all the business stuff.  Just like many idols, many athletes just do as they're told and go where they're told.  If Yuna Kim hadn't had scheduling conflicts, she'd be embroiled in this too since apparently they're taking down everyone who had any connection whatsoever with this person

Jjamppong Monday, November 21, 2016

I've heard my parents talking about this. However this is all speculation. We should try to believe that everyone is innocent until proven guilty (referring to Son Yeonjae). As for Park Geun-hye... well let's just say as a Korean, I don't approve of her.

pink_oracle Monday, November 21, 2016

Well done Yuna, the path of righteousness was the right one to take even though at the time it probably wasn't easy.

ATA pink_oracle Monday, November 21, 2016

It wasn't about taking a path of righteousness, it was about scheduling conflicts. Back then, there would have been no reason to reject the offer other than scheduling conflicts

pink_oracle ATA Monday, November 21, 2016

Then why did the Park administration black list her for missing it?

NgohiongPuso pink_oracle Monday, November 21, 2016

They didn't black list her... Some events are just plain political. If her schedule was full to begin with .. why would she force herself to join that event. The aftermath for not joining is probably something they don't know.. and since these are all mere speculations.. then I think what we are talking about here is moot and academic.

ATA pink_oracle Monday, November 21, 2016

her missing an event because of scheduling conflicts is not a criticism of the organizers (government) but they could have taken offense to it nonetheless. It would be like you saying you can't hang out with someone because you already have plans but that other person getting offended and deciding they hate you... maybe that's not the best analogy, idk lol
