Media outlet criticized for using insensitive language to refer to sexual harassment victim

Buzz

Korean media outlet Herald Corporation came under direct fire from netizens who noticed usage of insensitive language in one of its article titles.

The article in question was regarding 58-year-old Yang, the head of an endoscopy center in Gangnam District. Yang was arrested this past March 2 for repeatedly sexually harassing one of his patients during a treatment session. Yang's arrest comes four years after suspicions of his sexual harassment were first raised. In that time period, Yang conducted treatments amounting to around 50 million KRW (~$41,000).

Herald Corporation, who reported on this incident, stirred the anger of the public when they had labeled the victim as the 'Colonoscopy Woman.'

Many readers protested Herald Corporation's use of insensitive language, objecting the article's title on Twitter. They wrote, "Are they crazy? A male doctor sexually harassed [a woman] so why is she called 'the colonoscopy woman'???????" "When I felt South Korea really fell into the pits of degeneration: when reports were released a couple years ago on the 'Nayoung Case,' people were saying that it's not right to label the incident using the victim's name so the name was changed to 'Cho Doo Soon Case' (Cho Doo Soon is the name of the criminal). Now there are names like 'Turnk Girl,' Cat Mom Incident,' and 'Colonoscopy Woman,'" and, "'Colonoscopy Woman' lololololol I wonder if they did it on purpose...are people really not that educated..?"
