The reason Yoo Hee Yeol broke down and left 'Sketchbook' after the plagiarism controversy

AKP STAFF

Amidst the plagiarism controversy, singer-songwriter Yoo Hee Yeol broke down and decided to leave 'Yoo Hee Yeol's Sketchbook.'

Sports Seoul quoted a broadcasting official and explained, "Yoo Hee Yeol had a strong attachment to 'Yoo Hee Yeol's Sketchbook' enough to run it for 600 episodes. However, he completely collapsed after seeing his musical colleagues on the show '100 Minutes Discussion' depicting him to be an unscrupulous plagiarist."

According to the report, Yoo Hee Yeol informed the production team of his intention to leave 'Sketchbook' after the broadcast of MBC's '100 Minute Discussion,' which aired on the 5th. The production team fervently tried to dissuade Yoo Hee Yeol, but it was reported that he took a firm stance after he completely broke down.

Previously, Yoo Hee Yeol acknowledged the plagiarism controversy and issued an official apology, but he did not discuss the programs that he appeared on. He revealed that he had no intentions to leave 'Yoo Hee Yeol's Sketchbook,' which has been his beloved show for 13 years. KBS was also doing its best to protect Yoo Hee Yeol, such as closing the audience bulletin board, which was the communication channel for 'Yoo Hee Yeol's Sketchbook.'

However, the broadcast of '100 Minute Discussion' changed everything. Yoo Hee Yeol's feelings were seriously hurt after hearing the discussion between Kim Tae Won, the leader of the group Boohwal, and Im Jin Mo, a music critic.

Kim Tae Won expressed his opinion, "If this (plagiarism) is considered a disease, it can be seen that it was neglected too much before treatment. In Korea, this problem has never been talked about. We just let it pass. I think this is also the case this time." Im Jin Mo also pointed out, "I don't understand. He is someone educated enough. I believe this is an issue with morality. I think that way. I'm sure he knows that well. He apologized again. He acknowledged the similarity of the songs. This is not a light issue."

In the end, Yoo Hee Yeol broke down from the criticism from his music colleagues, and he announced that he was leaving 'Yoo Hee Yeol's Sketchbook' as well as JTBC's 'New Festa' one after another.

On the 19th, Yoo Hee Yeol said, "There are parts of the allegations of plagiarism that are being raised now that I have a hard time accepting. Many of the allegations that are raised are opinions and interpretations of each, but it is difficult for me to accept. But I will self-reflect further so that these controversies aren't raised again.”

This sucks. Sakamoto, the artist of the song that was allegedly plagiarised, spoke up and said that he felt it was fine and that there were similarities but that rarely can anyone create an entirely unique song. He himself has clear similarities with some famous classical musicians because he has taken inspiration from them. Other people speaking up and saying "this is not a light issue"... who are they? Yoo Hee Yeol apologised, Sakamoto has said that it is fine and never an issue, so aren't these other people just pushing something for their own sake now? It really, really sucks because Sketchbook has been such a solid platform for artists for such a long time and is dearly beloved. For Yoo Hee Yeol to "retire" or at least retire the show like this is sad.

Most of the acceptable music patterns have already been produced so it's common to hear similar beats. Don't know why this was such a huge controversy, I think his "colleagues" just wanted him out of the picture? Don't know for sure though.
