A 50-year-old man was found unconscious lying on the cold living room floor on the morning of Lunar New Year.

According to police officials on January 29, a man was found dead at 9:40am on January 28 in Uijeongbu city.

The man's nephew had brought over the traditional Lunar New Year dish of rice cake soup when he found his uncle's unconscious body on the floor and called the police.

It appeared the man had fallen asleep on the living room floor after drinking the night before and died of hypothermia.  On this day, the temperature in the Uijeongbu area had dropped to -11.3 Celsius (11.66 degrees Fahrenheit).

The police stated that the man had been going through some hardships while living alone since his mother had passed away in 2013.

On the day of the incident, the coal briquette heating vent at his home had stopped functioning, causing the gas to go out as well.

Although the electric heating pad was the only source of warmth, it wasn't enough to sustain body heat for long.

This sounds terrible except, 50 is not "elderly". Obviously he wasn't that poor either. He had heat. He passed out drunk and died of hypothermia. This a sad drinking story. Not a sad poverty stricken elderly person dying from neglect.

I think just a heating mat wasnt enough for a -11 deg C cold weather, you can literally die without proper heating, that is why many celebs donate coal briq to poor familes without electric boiler and still need to use coals as heating, but he was too drunk to put on coals and also it was faulty as mentioned.

Right so this isn't some sad story about a homeless man freezing to death. It's the sad story of someone who got drunk passed out and died from the cold.

yeah its not like some old 80 year old grandma or so who cant afford heating and died in her sleep. but its still sad that some one froze to death in a modern city.

It is but more often old people die from the heat than the cold. They dehydrate easy. I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often in korea considering the drinking culture and the damned freezing cold winters.

Still remember the recent "Flower Crew" episode when they visited Kim Jae Dong, he was telling Seo Jang Hoon that he dun turn on aircon in summer (his aircon was very old and i think it broke down or something), and he dun turn on boiler in winter, (probably just wore more clothing to keep warm instead). I guess Seo Jang Hoon was feeling sorry for his old friend and the caption was saying that he might gift an aircon to KJD.

People have the misconception that Social Security pays very well it does not . My father in law retired and gets social security however because he can barely afford his mortgage that he uses his social security to pay with he has to work another job just so he can afford to buy some groceries and pay the utilities and he is a Veteran.I am disabled and get only $650 a month for disability, try to pay for your life needing medications , a mortgage and utilities on that ! Right now my husband works i full time and one part time job and we still cannot afford to heat our house most of the time it is about 30 degrees in our house and many blamkets still do not make you warm . My condolences to the man's family . Very sad indeed.

Honestly, if it was in America, with the way we treat our elderly there's a good chance no one in his family would have gone there at all. :/

This is ridiculous and people need to stop spreading this damned lie. First of all our government attempts to take care our elderly through programs like social security and medicare. Next, this gives the impression that Americans don't care about their elderly when we do. Americans are made up of many kinds of ethic groups, nationalities and cultures, including Koreans who honor, care for and revere their old people. Why in the world would you say something like this when you know it's not the truth. Just because you think people want to hear it. Stop bashing your own country. Americans have enough to sorry for this isn't one of them.

Wowwww, damn lol. I mean, Medicare and SS are a joke, see annette's comment above, and lord help you if you're elderly and a veteran and/or disabled, cuz you're basically screwed, but yeah, we're doing a great job, thumbs up America.

You are making gross generalizations. There are lots of veterans. Especially now that we seem to be perpetually at war. Social Security is bad not because it's a bad program but because it has failed to keep up with the rising costs of basic necessities like housing, energy and food. Wage stagnation is also a problem something we have been experiencing for more than 40 years now. Also corporations and the rich are no longer paying their fair share that fund these programs. There are a lot of factors why neither of these programs are perfect but people would be living in the streets without them.

Well obviously I'm making generalizations-- I'm not trying to fit a detailed essay on social and economic issues in America into an AKP comment. Bottom line: Americans are, in general, selfish and stingy, and you shouldn't skimp on your retirement savings. It's sad, but if it wasn't true, Trump wouldn't be president.

50 is elderly lol. Actually at 55 you are considered a senior citizen. A Veteran has NOTHING to do with war . A veteran is someone who retired from the military. lol My dads been in for 30 yrs nothing you can say that i dont already know.

there isnt a misconception. Your social security is based off of how much you put away and your 401k plan. Really, its you who chooses what your social security will look like in the end. You dont save while young you will have less when your old.

Actually you don't even have to retire to be a vet but there are certain criteria you might need to meet to receive benefits. Retirees are entitled to a retirement pension and most of the other services such as health benefits. I was just suggesting we had more of them considering we've had "build ups" in troop strength and then "draw downs" depending on you know whatever conflict we were engaged in.

I also understand that some institutions consider you a senior at 55 others don't until you're 60. Nobody is eligible for medicare until 65. If you become disabled prior to 65 you might be covered under medicade which is issued by the states. My father had a combination of medicade and medicare because he was 77 and indigent.

He probably thought the drinking would keep him warm , very sad. Here in America, the utility companies can still turn the heat and electric off during the winter if you do not pay. It is not a matter that they do not want to pay . it is a matter of they cannot pay. If you do not pay rent you are homeless if you do not pay for you daily life needing medications you can die, if you do not pay your heat you freeze . what a hell of a choice. Not everyone lives beyond their means, w do not but because i have many medical issues i need daily meds so i can breathe etc. because Social Security . medicare only allows one asthmatic inhaler one per month i have been sick with a very bad cold and have used my one in haler within two weeks had to pay for another one and it cost 60.00 dollars out of our pocket , that money was to pay for our electric bill before they shut us off.. i need my nebulizer to help breath at night. We have cut our phone bill down by using a less phone co. and cable out and we buy very little food only neccessary things like milk and bread and hamburg that we can stretch and some chicken on a good week.

I have an aunt who is disabled and living in the states. She has something called Extra Help that helps pay for the 12,000.00 worth of medicine she needs monthly. Please look into this in your state. I know there are services that can help you and your husband. Take care.

Yikes that's rough, in the UK they wouldn't be allowed to turn your power off during winter due to your health condition. We have many elderly die in the UK each winter because they will not turn their heating on. Which is extra tragic as we have a winter fuel allowance for pensioners and the NHS.

if he wasnt drunk he might have woke up to put on more clothings or kept the fire up, with new coals, to keep warm but i guess he was too drunk to wake up to do so and the temperature dropped too fast.

I can just picture that when he was awake and drunk he didn't feel the cold at all. He was probably too deep asleep/passed out to realize his body was shutting down from the cold. I feel really bad for the nephew, he was doing everything right to look out for his uncle but when someone won't help themselves there's little to nothing anyone else can do.

yeah i heard of stories (real life ones) of people getting drunk at the bar, and was on the way walking home, and was so intoxicated that he just fell asleep on the roadside in some alley, and froze to death.

A few years ago there was a girl and her boyfriend walking home drunk and they decided to cut across a school. The girl couldn't climb back out the perimeter fence so the boyfriend said he'd come back with help. He forgot all about her and went home to bed and she froze to death in a doorway. Drunk people are not smart people.

Somebody needs to work on converting Celsius to Fahrenheit.  11.3 Celsius is 53° Fahrenheit and it's not a temp where people can usually die of hypothermia.

I know the poor man's nephew brought him over some soup and found him dead, but do you really think a picture of soup is appropriate for this story? R.I.P 50 year old man.

I don't really like that a soup is the image that they use for this story. I found it disrespectful and a bit rude for them to do that. To me. But R.I.P to the guy
