"When I use the restroom and the janitor lady comes in, it is so uncomfortable."

A recent online post by a male college student at Hanyang University is receiving a lot of attention.

The person wrote, "I was at the school library restroom and two female janitors came in and then out... to them, it seemed like an everyday occurrence."

He explained that regardless of the janitor's age, they are female, and as a man, it is extremely uncomfortable to have female janitors walking around right next to him while he is using the urinal.

Other male students related to the concern. One wrote, "I was once using the urinal and the janitor lady asked me to raise my foot. A male janitor should clean men's restrooms, or there should be a sign that says 'currently cleaning' so we don't go in there."

However, the janitors also suffer and raised their own concerns. They stated that they feel embarrassed as well, especially when there are older men in the restroom.

There are issues being raised, not only about the janitor issues but also about the general structure of Korean restrooms because they tend to be very open.

Even though men can feel just as embarrassed, often men's restrooms are most likely to be built without enough space to provide privacy between urinals.

While this issue is gaining a lot of attention, many are hoping to see changes in the hiring practices by the school and other agencies involved.

I don't see what there is to fuss about, they're just there to do a job. At my school, pretty much all the janitors are female, and no one really minds them cleaning or being in there while they do their business. Plus, if it is a problem, they can just use the actual toilets instead of urinals for more privacy.

Such ignorance on your part. "Just doing a job" is no excuse. Men deserve restroom privacy just as much as women do. And it's pretty easy to do. Hire male janitors to clean the men's room. Duh! Most of the time women janitors are in men's rooms, they are just needlessly mopping clean floors and getting in the way. Plus, Korean architects needs to grow a couple of brain cells and learn to strategically design men's rooms so that urinals are not in full view of passersby. For these reasons, I do not use urinals in Korea. It's dehumanizing. As advanced as Korea is in many ways, it is still a third world country when it comes to restrooms. They are basically only half a step out of the stone age with regard to restrooms. Pathetic.

I understand them. if men aren't allowed in women's toilets for obvious reason, so shouldn't women be allowed in men's.

Huh. This is interesting because we are allowing people with gender dysphora to use their preferred bathrooms. If this makes korea uncomfortable you wouldnt be comfortable in the west.
