Supreme court favors distributor in SG Wannabe and SeeYa's royalty dispute

AKP STAFF

In a final verdict by the Supreme Court's Civil Division 1 on February 29, the lengthy legal battle over music royalties involving popular vocal groups SG Wannabe (Kim Yong-jun, Kim Jin-ho, Lee Seok-hoon) and SeeYa (Kim Yeon-ji, Lee Bo-ram, Nam Gyu-ri) concluded with the distributor's victory.

The lawsuit, initiated by Kim Kwang-soo, CEO and executive producer of PocketDol Studio, against the music distributor Danal, sought damages for unpaid royalties from the albums of SG Wannabe and SeeYa, claiming losses up to 50 billion won ($42 million) when considering various estimated amounts.

Despite appeals, the Supreme Court dismissed the case without further hearing, affirming the lower court's decision that Kim Kwang-soo's contributions did not grant him neighboring rights as a music producer under the current copyright law.

This decision comes amidst a resurgence of interest in SG Wannabe and SeeYa's music, following their appearances on the MBC show "Hangout with Yoo," where their performances led to a successful chart comeback.
