TV Chosun suddenly removes their exclusive report of Lee Sun Gyun's farewell letter

AKP STAFF

A day after Lee Sun Gyun's death was reported, TV Chosun revealed partial contents of the late actor's farewell letter and reported it as an "Exclusive." However, TV Chosun suddenly deleted all the reports of Lee Sun Gyun's farewell letter from all platforms on January 4. The reason for the sudden deletion has not been disclosed.

Previously, on the 27th of last month, TV Chosun's 'News 9' revealed parts of Lee Sun Gyun's farewell letter. TV Chosun conveyed that the late actor had left a farewell letter in the form of a memo before leaving his home. The news media outlet revealed that he had left letters for his wife and the representative of his agency.

The central issue of this report was that the bereaving family had requested for the farewell letter to remain private, and TV Chosun had revealed the content without the family's consent.

Subsequently, HODU&U Entertainment, Lee Sun Gyun's agency, released an official statement presumed to be directed to TV Chosun.

The agency stated, "We have recently become aware of the spreading of rumors and misinformation concerning our actors," and added, "We have initiated the process of collecting relevant data while concurrently taking legal action."

HODU&U Entertainment further revealed, "On January 2, we filed a complaint against a reporter who disseminated false information as if it were factual on the night of December 27 last year." They also demanded that the reporter sincerely apologize and actively participate in the ensuing legal proceedings.

Other media outlets, such as Dispatch and MBC, have also interpreted the statement from HODU&U Entertainment as being directed to TV Chosun.

On January 3, Dispatch wrote, "On the 27th of December, a cable channel reported on the contents related to the farewell letter. It is reported that there are issues with the content of that article." On the same day, MBC reported, "There are interpretations that the latest statement (from HODU&U) points to the coverage of the contents related to the late Lee Sun Gyun's farewell letter by one media outlet."

Following the statement from Lee Sun Gyun's agency, TV Chosun deleted the report and video on January 4. All related articles on TV Chosun's webpage return to an unavailable page.

According to the 'Suicide Reporting Guidelines 3.0' created by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Central Suicide Prevention Center, and the Korean Journalists Association, the media should refrain from reporting on the contents related to farewell letters. The guidelines emphasize the importance of protecting the privacy of the deceased and their families and preventing the glorification of suicide by avoiding reporting on matters related to farewell letters as much as possible.

"The reason for the sudden deletion has not been disclosed."

The reason is that they're afraid of getting sued. As they should be.
