BBC spotlights the dynamic shift in female roles in K-Dramas

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has highlighted the transformation of female lead characters in Korean dramas.

On the 10th (local time), BBC published an article titled 'K-Dramas: Women Breaking TV Boundaries,' stating, "Many current K-dramas feature complex and strong female characters that reflect significant changes in society and media practices."

The article mentioned Netflix's 'The Glory' and ENA's 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo' as examples.

It continued, "One of this year's biggest hits, 'The Glory,' tells the story of a woman taking revenge against her bullies, while the equally popular 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo' features a female lawyer with autism."

BBC noted, “The role of women in K-dramas has not always been interesting,” pointing out that in the past, dramas like 'Boys Over Flowers,' where a rude rich heir falls for a brave working-class girl, were popular.

Nowadays, protagonists are more likely to be independent, professional, and uninterested in marriage.

In an interview with BBC, actress Uhm Jung Hwa, who played the lead in JTBC's 'Doctor Cha' which depicts a housewife's transformation into a doctor, stated, "Cha Jung-Sook talks about fulfilling her role as a mother while pursuing her dream, and her journey is unbelievably touching."

She added, "When I debuted, one could not play lead roles after 30, and many had to play mother roles after 35. Even the most talented and beautiful women would disappear from the screen due to their age."

Screenwriter Baek Mi-kyung, known for pioneering strong female characters in numerous dramas, shared, “'The Lady in Dignity' was a story about middle-aged women and was repeatedly rejected by various broadcasters.” She revealed that after the success of 'Strong Woman Do Bong Soon,' JTBC aired 'The Lady in Dignity.'

She expressed her ambition, "Since my dramas, female characters have become more proactive, powerful, cool, and independent, but I am still not satisfied. I want to change the landscape."

K-dramas are indeed improving a lot in terms of showing strong female characters. From “Autumn in My Heart” Song Hye Kyo (who was just enduring every physical assault silently) to “The Glory” Song Hye Kyo who took a stand against the bully, the change is clearly visible.
