Bang Si Hyuk and J.Y. Park are making headlines after their appearance on 'You Quiz on the Block.'

On the November 1 KST broadcast of the tvN variety show, the two K-pop industry moguls revealed the extraordinary amount of money their songs make.

J.Y. Park mentioned TWICE's hit songs as the "most recent" top-earners of his catalog – naming, "What is Love?" and "Feel Special" specifically.

"The figures are different. It's unbelievable,"
he explained, adding, "In the past, Bang Si Hyuk said, 'If one song becomes a hit in the United States, it could make tens of billions of won,' and that really happens." Although he did not specify the exact amount these songs have earned, it is clear that it is in the billions.

On the other hand, Bang Si Hyuk, who owns an estimated fortune of ~$1.9B USD according to Forbes, said, "I'm sorry. I really don't know [how much my top-ranking songs are making]. I've never looked into it," boasting an exceptional class. Currently, HYBE's market capital is estimated to be at 11.8 trillion won (~9B USD).

The moment became a hot topic in domestic media, with many reporters bringing up other cases where those in the Korean entertainment industry mentioned just how much they make in copyright royalties.

One such example is trot singer Young Tak, who appeared on the MBC variety program 'Radio Star' in August and said, "I'm careful when it comes to talking about the income I receive from copyright royalties. In the case of my song 'Why Are You Coming Out of There?,' it's about 100 times the monthly rent of the house I used to live in."

Melomance's Kim Min Suk also talked about copyright royalties on 'Point of Omniscient Interfere' in February, saying, "My parents manage the income. I get a monthly allowance of 5 million won. When it was at its lowest, the copyright royalties alone were three times the allowance."

Soloist Ahn Ye Eun joked about the double-edged sword of copyright royalties while appearing on 'Video Star' in July 2020. "The copyright royalties that I receive are about the salary of a senior executive in a large company. I earned about 100 million won a year from copyright royalties," she revealed, before playfully adding, "Thanks to that, I pay a lot of taxes."

Why would any of these numbers be a surprise to anyone?

US is the biggest market after all for music.
