Cambodian prosecutors have indicted a Chinese couple for the murder of Byun Ah Yeong (Also known as AfreecaTV streamer Ahyeong), a Korean woman in her 30s who was discovered deceased in the local river. 

The French media agency AFP reported on June 14 (local time) that the couple, both in their 30s, were officially charged with murder on June 13.

Prosecutors have characterized the crime as "murder with torture," and if found guilty, the couple could face a sentence of life imprisonment. However, specific details regarding the torture allegations have not been disclosed.

The exact cause of AfreecaTV streamer Ahyeong's death remains undetermined. While Cambodian authorities believe an autopsy is necessary to ascertain the cause, the deceased's family is reportedly opposed to the procedure.

On June 6, Ahyeong's body was discovered wrapped in a red mat, desiccated, in a village in Kandal Province near Cambodia's capital city of Phnom Penh. It has been reported that she was traveling with one of her acquaintances on June 2. Preliminary reports from the post-mortem examination indicated that Ahyeong had suffered extensive facial injuries, with deep lacerations, burns, and bruises to such a degree that her face was unidentifiable. Furthermore, she had sustained a fracture to her neck.

Cambodian police identified the Chinese couple through fingerprints found on the fabric surrounding the victim's body. They were subsequently arrested. The couple claimed to the police that BJ Ahyeong, who had visited their hospital on June 4, had suddenly died from a seizure while receiving treatment, and they had abandoned the body.

On June 13 (Korean time), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea announced that Cambodian authorities are actively investigating the case and are providing necessary consular assistance to the bereaved family.
