Shocking dialogue about the Auschwitz concentration camp in 'Bo-ra! Deborah' sparks outrage

AKP STAFF

The new drama 'Bo-ra! Deborah' has found itself in hot water, as the latest episode has ignited a firestorm of controversy after the main character Yeon Bo Ra (played by Yoo In Na) delivered controversial lines.

In episode 9, Bo Ra mentions the Auschwitz concentration camp as part of a misguided analogy about taking care of one's appearance. This has been met with widespread criticism as many feel that the writer is trivializing a horrendous historical event for the sake of appearance obsession.

In the scene, Bo Ra is seen speaking to Lee Soo Hyuk (played by Yoon Hyun Min) when she begins to deliver the controversial lines. She says, "In the Auschwitz concentration camp, where people were dying on their excrement, some of them, with a cup of water, drank half of it and washed their face with the rest. They even shaved with a piece of glass using the back of a tray as a mirror. And they survived. Taking care of your appearance and dressing up is a matter of survival."

Many viewers were outraged as the drama writer used a horrendously tragic historical event as a means to explain "taking care of one's appearance and dressing up is a matter of survival." The use of such a sensitive and deeply painful event to justify appearance obsession has been met with widespread condemnation and criticism since many are angered by how the writer sees survival tactics employed by victims of a devastating historical event as a mere "dress up" that solely focuses on appearances.

Many netizens are taking to social media and online communities to express their anger towards the drama and the writer. They commented, "At the time, the reason the victims at the camp washed using the water was not to look 'pretty' or to 'dress up'. It was a way to keep their hopes for survival and protect their own dignity. It's really ignorant to use this as an analogy," "This is so crazy," "The writer really needs a proper education," "I really don't think I can shield the drama," "This is just pure ignorance," "Who is the writer? They really have a messed up way of thinking," and "That's just crossing the line."

The dialogue is unbelievably insensitive and it adds nothing to the scene. It looks like a writer was trying to be edgy and smart at the same thing but it only show how ignorant she/he is. Seriously I dont say this often but the director should apologize for allowing this scene to air and they show delete it before selling to other places that could potentially air.
