"When I use the restroom and the janitor lady comes in, it is so uncomfortable."
A recent online post by a male college student at Hanyang University is receiving a lot of attention.
The person wrote, "I was at the school library restroom and two female janitors came in and then out... to them, it seemed like an everyday occurrence."
He explained that regardless of the janitor's age, they are female, and as a man, it is extremely uncomfortable to have female janitors walking around right next to him while he is using the urinal.
Other male students related to the concern. One wrote, "I was once using the urinal and the janitor lady asked me to raise my foot. A male janitor should clean men's restrooms, or there should be a sign that says 'currently cleaning' so we don't go in there."
However, the janitors also suffer and raised their own concerns. They stated that they feel embarrassed as well, especially when there are older men in the restroom.
There are issues being raised, not only about the janitor issuesbut also about the general structure of Korean restrooms because they tend to be very open.
Even though men can feel just as embarrassed, often men's restrooms are most likely to be built without enough space to provide privacy between urinals.
While this issue is gaining a lot of attention, many are hoping to see changes in the hiring practices by the school and other agencies involved.
