During the showcased for Black Pink's new album 'Square One,' Papa YG claimed that Black Pink is unique in the sense that there is no appointed leader.

The YG founder explained, "There were many groups that YG birthed, and we decided to go without a leader for Black Pink. The group never had a leader from the get-go. Because the four of them spent such a long time together, whenever a project is suggested to them, they discuss it together for the results."

What do you think of this more team-oriented formation of Black Pink?

jennie is already a de facto leader based on the members interactions. she's a natural and seemed to command attention whenever she speaks or do something.

the whole "leader" business is an east-asian contrivance anyway... none of the popular western boy- and girlbands had members explicitly presented as the leader of their band.

This is a good move for yg to avoid a leader for favoritism issues

I think it's also to avoid issues within the group. Seriously, this group is so balanced. They have their own individuality and can work in solos as well and still do good. I think YG avoided biases through not appointing leader. I am not saying that this applied to 2NE1 but I think he wants to avoid another member leaving again. (He wasted Minzy tbh and just focused more on CL on solos, Dara on Varieties, well before he also favored Bom) Use BP wisely YG. Use them individually. Not only one member but all the members because they can.

Leaders are there to squelch personality issues and to delegate.  Obviously these 4 have no issues that would need a leader to sort out.

I can explain this,  I think it's first due to the girls upbringing with 2 members been raised abroad,  one from Thailand and I think jisoo been to international schools,  having said this it means that the four of them treat each other as friends,  just a normal group of friends especially that the age gap between the maknae and the unnie is only 2 years so they function without an unnie and maknae and all of this,  also I think the four of them have the leader quality I can sense it myself,  that's y it was, hard to appoint a leader,  he probably saw how the four worked so well together and it worked for the past years during the pressures of training so it will definitely work after debut
