[Drama Review] 'Cheese In The Trap' - Episode 7

Park Hae Jin

Another episode, another headache. A new semester starts and, as Yoo Jung and Seol are starting to get ridiculously close and sweet, Oh Young Gon makes his appearance and is not having any of it.

But before jumping into Young Gon and all his grotesqueness, Seol comes face to face with the infamous panty thief. Thankfully, everyone, including In Ho and Yoo Jung, are there to help out in catching the thief and comfort her.

Yoo Jung is this episode's white knight as he is seen mercilessly beating up the panty thief, bringing out his 'punisher'-like mannerisms once again. During the fight, the thief tells Yoo Jung that they are the same and that no one can understand people like them, provoking Yoo Jung. As we are witnessing a whole new sadistic side of Yoo Jung, Seol also overhears the two talking and can't help but feel intimidated and scared.

What I particularly noticed during this disturbing scene is how every one of Yoo Jung's cuts were shot from a lower angle, reemphasizing Yoo Jung's position as the 'punisher.' This lower angle shots are usually used to make the subject look extra powerful which, in this particular moment, works perfectly. Once the scene is over, it adjusts back to neutral shot as Yoo Jung is back to normal(?) self.

Honestly, I felt bad for Yoo Jung when he told Seol that he regrets what he's done because in the end, he did all this for Seol and acted upon his emotions more so than his calculations. This was the first time seeing Yoo Jung getting physically worked up when in the past he's used others to manipulate the situation. Seol does in the end understands Yoo Jung's intentions and the two come out even stronger as a couple.

On to Young Gon, the real headache of this episode. Briefly touching on his past,

Young Gon has a hideous history of harassing both Bora and Seol and he is back to stir some more trouble in Yoo Jung and Seol's life. He is probably the biggest headache that Seol will face for the next couple episodes.

Though not a fan of excessive flashbacks, I'm glad that there were more flashback scenes of Young Gon, giving me a full view of what exactly Young Gon is capable of so I am emotionally ready for what's to come.

Other than few annoyances, however, we only see that Young Gon is just planning his revenge on Seol and Yoo Jung this episode, leaving more room for juicy developments between the Seol-In Ho-Yoo Jung trio.

Despite the many, many adversities that Yoo Jung and Seol come across and the painfully awkward moments, it's a relief that the two are actually making progress as a couple. I honestly want to thank the writers here for including a semi-kiss scene between Yoo Jung and Seol because I thought that we were going to have to wait another week for something like this to happen.

Though their beginnings seemed premature, it's clear that their relationship is moving at a steady pace, just like how a real, conventional relationship would. Sweet and innocent, Seol makes careful advances towards Yoo Jung, bringing back the traditional dating style.

What's impressive all the while surprising about this drama is that even the supporting actors are perfectly in sync with the characters that you see in the webtoon. Sometimes in Korean dramas, it's common for supporting roles or extras to be painfully awkward in front of the camera to the point that it strays from the overall flow.

In 'Cheese In The Trap', however, everyone looks like they just belong in the scene and the synergy between not only the main characters, but the supporting roles and extras are (dare I say) flawlessly natural.
