[Drama Review] 'She Was Pretty' - Episode 15

Siwon, Hwang Jung Eum, Park Seo Joon, Go Jun Hee
Now that we are just one episode away from the official conclusion, I am almost convinced that this drama will have a happy ending. There are very few things that can go wrong in the last episode, and we have already been surprised with all the 'wild cards' that the writers had hidden up their sleeve: Shin Hyuk is the acclaimed author Ten, that weird frumpy ahjusshi is the new VP of Jin Sung Group, and last but not least, Sung Joon and Hye Jin are engaged. Everything has wrapped up nicely, the burning questions have mostly been answered.

And by 'mostly,' I mean that we still don't know what really happened to Shin Hyuk. After he gave that interview for 'The Most' to drag it up to first place and save it from discontinuation, he completely, utterly disappeared from everyone's lives. The profound secret that he had been hiding all this time was that he was adopted...into a white family in America. I was waiting for something more dark and sinister for some reason, like, oh I don't know...that Shin Hyuk was abused as a child at 10-years-old which led him to develop multiple personality disorder and form an alter ego called Ten. I don't know why my thoughts went there....

Nooo I wanted the mustachioed, derpy, idiot-editor Shin Hyuk back! Wahhhhh

This doesn't feel right.

Of course, such a morbid twist wouldn't be suited for this kind of drama. Shin Hyuk actually grew up in a loving adopted home and had just begun writing on a lark. After his identity and background as a Korean-American adoptee was exposed through an interview with 'The Most,' the magazine surpassed 'New Look,' its longstanding competition. And then, afterwards, Shin Hyuk up and left Korea, presumably to go back to his family in America.

This lady's accessorizing skills amaze me to no end.

This was where I scratched my head a little bit, as I really didn't see the need for Shin Hyuk to go back. It's not like his coming out as Ten would have any significant impact on his career at 'The Most.' Sure, people will talk and the media will buzz, making him a hot issue for a while but that will eventually die down. Maybe Shin Hyuk's notoriety as Ten could have lent the magazine a certain competitive edge since people will take a keener interest in the magazine knowing that a popular, acclaimed author works as an editor there.

I've spent half the review talking about Shin Hyuk and his abrupt departure, so before I ramble on about him forever, let me just bring up these cute little lovebirds Sung Joon and Hye Jin. As you read in the intro, yes, the two got engaged. And I was wrong when I wrote in my last review that Hye Jin hadn't answered to Sung Joon's proposal. He never actually proposed to her; he only said he would in the future. But he didn't even get to live up to his word because Hye Jin proposed to him first and that night.y'all know what went down (bow chikka wowow).

Wonder what he whispered in Hye Jin's ear?

Alas, Hye Jin and Sung Joon didn't get to revel in their rekindled love for long as Sung Joon left for America to go back to 'The Most' headquarters and Hye Jin decided to stay behind to pursue her dream of becoming a children's storybook writer. These two just reunited after nearly twenty years and now they're going to be separated again for god knows how long.

I don't remember this being a mukbang drama...but damn that sushi looks good!

But I really have to commend Sung Joon for respecting Hye Jin's decision to follow her dreams. He didn't force her to come along with him, nor did he stay and abandon his career. It's funny that now we're near the end of the drama, Sung Joon is the one fretting over how he isn't 'good enough' or worthy of asking for Hye Jin's hand in marriage. They finally met up, but the timing wasn't right. Sung Joon may have looked like he had it all: climbing the career ladder and in possession of both looks and smarts. But he realized, upon meeting Hye Jin again, he was lacking in many aspects. And Hye Jin is also going through a dramatic change in her life, finally landing the job of her dreams after all those years of mooching off her friend. In short, they sacrificed for the short-run for a better chance at long-term.

R. Kelly's "Bump & Grind" starts playing in the background

Let's just hope that after all the ups and downs the writer will give us a happy ending because if not, I don't know what I'll do with the sixteen wasted hours goddamit
